Working Out Inner Demons Through Fiction Writing
By Roxanne Rhoads

Psychologists have long touted the therapeutic effects of journal writing but as a fiction writer I can honestly say that fiction writing can be just as therapeutic and a heck of a lot more fun.

I discovered this quite by accident.

I created a character and was writing a scene about the jerky ex-husband, he was a cheating bastard and as I wrote and wrote low and behold I discovered he resembled a couple of my ex boyfriends. Then I created a monster in a story, and wouldn’t you know that monster had a few personality characteristics of one of my particularly demonic exes.

Then there’s the little boy in one of my novels in progress who is a lot like a certain little guy running around my house wreaking havoc on a daily basis. It’s a great way to vent my mommy frustrations while still showing him love.

Then there’s the mothers in two of my novels in progress- turns out I’ve been working out my mommy issues subconsciously through my writing.

Of course none of these characters are exact replicas of people in my real life but quite a few are mish mashed mix ups that hold the character traits of people from my past and present.

And let me tell you, it’s very therapeutic to fictionally do bad things to a demon that sorta kinda resembles an ex that did you wrong. Not to mention it’s a lot of fun.

It is also very cathartic to work out your inner demons on the page, especially when you don’t know you’re doing it until the character experiences a great feeling of relief and so do you. It’s like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. I had one of those wow moments recently.

I think this is why writers have to write. We are compelled to do it and it is our therapy. Why pay a stranger to listen to your problems when you can get paid to have hundreds and thousands of people read your craziness?

In my newest book, An Unexpected Evening, I don’t think I’m working out any demons, if I am I haven’t realized it yet.

An Unexpected Evening
By Roxanne Rhoads

Samuel is a centuries-old vampire who prefers to be a recluse. He is always afraid of losing control and becoming the monster he once was. Falling in love with a young witch has pushed his boundaries and pulled him out of his comfort zone.

Katerina always encourages Samuel to be more open, to let loose, and to really "live" instead of only existing in the shadows.

One night, he finally grants her wish . . . in ways she never imagined.

X-rated Excerpt:
I swirled my tongue around his rigid cock, flicking at the bulging veins as Samuel roughly squeezed and caressed my breasts. He leaned his long torso over my half-twisted body, shoving his large shaft into my mouth. Finally, he acted a little more . . . vampish.

I'd been waiting a long time for him to show me more of his true nature and to quit being afraid he'd break me. I wasn't as fragile as he thought.

Working him from a twisted and almost upside down angle turned out to be a bit uncomfortable. But my flexibility combined with my eagerness and hunger for his touch made my discomfort easier to ignore. I loved the feel of his hands roving over me as I wrapped my lips around him. It was well worth a little pain . . . in fact, it was a deliciously exquisite torture. The kind of torture I craved from time to time.

A relationship full of sweetness, wine, and roses could get dull after awhile, without the occasional scratch from a thorn.

I loved thorns. And I loved Samuel.

I continued to work him in and out of my mouth. He tasted so good; slightly salty, a little sweet, with a hint of cinnamon, and he felt even better: hard like steel wrapped in smooth velvet. This experience couldn't get any better . . . well, maybe if he was covered in dark chocolate. Nah, his was the most exquisite flavor of all. I simply couldn't get enough of my delicious vampire.

His hands grasped my breasts, squeezed, then tweaked my nipples. Hard. I moaned in sweet agony as the pain spiraled into immense pleasure, and arched my hips, hoping he'd move his attentions lower. He complied with an inhuman growl. His eyes fixed on me, glowing with an inner fire, which cranked up my heat level. A couple years earlier, I never would've imagined being with a vampire as the most amazing sexual experience of my life.

His large hand cupped my sex, and he dipped a finger inside me, barely, just enough to tease me, test the waters. I wiggled and raised my hips, begging for more, as I held tight to his shaft and continued to lick his sweet tip like a large lollipop.

His hand grazed my hard clit. I let go of his cock and inhaled sharply at the surprise of the touch. I wanted more, but his hand disappeared. Such a tease. Then out of nowhere, his hand came down and smacked my aching pussy. Hard, but not too hard. I moaned at the exquisite sting.

Oh yeah, that's what I'd been craving. Finally, my vamp got the blood moving inside me.

Hello Roxanne!
I'm not surprised that authors exorcise their demon exes by writing them into (and possibly bumping them off) in their stories.

I loved the excerpt. She should be careful what she wishes for. She asked for the full-on vamp and I think shes about to get one.

It does help. I think if I didn't write I'd be in the looney bin. :-)

The only time I ever wrote a journal was during my first pregnancy. I wrote it to my son. It was kind of fun to do.
That excerpt is incredible.

I haven't written a journal since my early twenties, but remember how nice it was to get thoughts on paper. The excerpt was great. Thanks for sharing.

Wow. That excerpt was so hot!
I used to write in a journal but it's a notebook for my dreams now. And I keep scraps of paper with random thoughts stapled in another notebook.
