30 days of Highlanders: Day 4: Guest Post with Diana at Book of Secrets

Apr 29, 2011

Modern Fairy Tales: Reason to Believe

First, I’d like to thank JoJo and Tigris Eden for inviting me to be a part of the 30 Days with a Highlander event! I’m Diana from Book of Secrets and The Forbidden Bookshelf, and, of course, I’m crazy about Highlanders. Usually when I think of Highlanders in romance novels, I picture the brawny kilt-wearing, sword-wielding warriors of long ago. But what about modern-day Highlanders? Can a girl find a real life laird to fall in love with today? The lucky heroine of REASON TO BELIEVE by Leslie Ann Dennis did just that…

From REASON TO BELIEVE:

“Just in time,” he said with a lift of his eyebrow. “Or I might have put my other idea into play.”

A pleasant shiver skittered through her. “And what idea would that be, pray tell?”

“To imitate my barbaric ancestors, maybe swing you over my shoulder, and carry you to my bed for the remainder of the night.”

She suddenly forgot how to breathe as her mind conjured up images of Conlan, having just returned from a fierce battle, dressed in his MacGregor hunting kilt of faded red and green tartan; his hair a mass of braids and loose locks; his steel-gray eyes glowing with lust for her. A savage warlord.

30 days of Highlanders: Day 3: Guest Post with Book Addict Patti + GIVEAWAY!

Apr 28, 2011

(image via Men in Kilts)
*Sigh* Who doesn't love those sexy men in kilts? I've certainly spent plenty of time swooning over fictional Highlanders. Some of my favorite Highlanders are written by Karen Marie Moning. Now, her Fever series gets plenty of love (as it well should, lol), but a lot of people don't realize her Highlander books tie into the Fever series; the fae and those sexy MacKeltars have important parts in both series.

What do I love about Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders? They're honorable, smart, stubborn, caring, sexy, loving, and strong. The heroines are all from modern day, and they each end up going back in time, so....that gives me hope that this could really happen. It could, right?

Here are the books in the order Ms. Moning suggests reading them, with description from her website in italics:

Guest Post: Kim Murphy - The Cunning Folk

Apr 22, 2011

The Cunning Folk

Imagine a beautiful woman being searched for minor body imperfections that would prove she was a witch. This scene was played out all across Europe. In North America, most people think of Salem, but in truth the first witch trial held on the continent took place in Virginia. As a Virginia resident, I was intrigued to learn more, and the premise became the basis for my paranormal/historical novel, The Dreaming: Walks Through Mist.

Some of those accused of being witches were the cunning folk. "Cunning folk" was the term used in English society, but throughout Europe, they were practitioners of many arts, including healing, treasure seeking, finding lost property, fortune telling, and, of course, love magic. Also known as wise men/women, conjurers, and wizards, they were well regarded members of the community, but in many cases that respect likely bordered on fear.

AAD Meet and Greet: Author Tilly Greene: Interview + Giveaway

Apr 21, 2011

Let's see, a little bit about me. Well, my name is Tilly Greene and this picture is definitely me, although I wear glasses, otherwise that's totally me. As for the book bursting into flames, that would be one of mine. I write erotic romances in futuristic, paranormal, shape shifter and contemporary sub-genres with a variety of themes such as bondage and ménages.

About you:
What do you like to read?
Just about everything! I’m a real bookie with overstuffed bookshelves in every room but two. That said, a constant in my reading choices is romances, and in all sub-genres. Right this minute, I’m leaning more towards contemporaries and also historicals—they were my first love in the romance field. Another genre I’m exploring is mysteries.

Primal Hunger by Sydney Somers (reviewed by Amy)

Primal Hunger: Pendragon Gargoyles Series, Book 1
Author:  Sydney Somers
Publisher:  Samhain Publishing, Ltd. (September 15, 2009)
Edition Reviewed:  Kindle Edition
ISBN-13: 9781605046693
Genre: Romance, Paranormal, Fantasy

Kennedy Beaumont loves her bartending job, even if her spirited nature sometimes gets her in trouble. Like threatening to hose down one of Pendragon’s co-owners. When it comes to Tristan, she could use a good hosing down herself—maybe it’ll help her stop casting him as the star of her wickedest dreams. Since he goes out of his way to avoid her, it ought to be easy to put him out of her head—until he reluctantly offers her a ride home.
Gargoyle shape-shifter Tristan Callaghan hasn’t had time for anything other than recovering the mystical dagger that was used to permanently lock his brother in a prison of stone. The cat inside him should have stopped craving Kennedy’s touch long ago, but now that she’s sitting next to him in his car, his very human need for her is sharper than ever.
The distraction is costly. In a split second, Kennedy finds herself thrust into a dangerous, millennia-old hunt for Excalibur. A hunt that marks her for death—and leaves Tristan with a painful choice—sacrifice his family, his quest…or the one woman meant to be his.

Book Tour: Eliza Gayle - Shifter Love: Wild and Furry, RAWR! + Giveaway

Apr 20, 2011

Shifter Love: Wild and Furry, RAWR!

When I sat down to write my first book ever I was going through a phase of reading nothing but paranormal books and I'd fallen head over heels for shifters. So I narrowed it down to either dragons or big cats. I thought about wolves for a few seconds but honestly I LOVE big cats. They are such gorgeous predatory creatures that can easily fool you with their majestic beauty. Then if you're not careful they'll simply bite you.

Despite the fact that I own a gorgeous (read: big baby) white Husky, I still opted to write about the kitties. They've always fascinated me and since I'd need to spend time on research I went for my first choice.

Jae Lynne Davies has been an avid fan of the paranormal since childhood, when her imagination developed in the form of written word. Shortly after the birth of her second child, she began to weave tales based on elaborate ideas, and before she knew it, she’d created worlds where the passion is hot, relationships are forbidden, and the constant struggle of power leaves readers feeling for the villain today, and the hero tomorrow.

Touch of Surrender, by Rhyannon Byrd (reviewed by Amy)

Touch of Surrender, Primal Instinct Series (May 1, 2010)

Author:  Rhyannon Byrd
Print Length: 384 pages
Publisher: HQN Books

ISBN: 13-9780373774647
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Their Love is their Destiny. . .With his auburn hair and lean build,
Kierland Scott looks more man than Lycan. But his wolf instincts are aroused by the gray-eyed Morgan Cantrell. Not because of her beauty, but because of her long-ago betrayal, a fateful choice that made their love impossible.

Now, however, the two Watchmen must team up, leaving the placid Lake Country
for the forests of Scandinavia. To rescue Kierland's brother, they must track a
vampire
and use their combined shape-shifting sensitivities in a battle that will take
them beyond death. As the two learn to seek together, they begin to understand the
history that has driven them apart. But they will have to overcome death itself, if their
shared passion is to have a chance.

MY THOUGHTS:
This was my first Rhyannon Byrd novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The storyline was very easily picked up, and although this is part of a series, it can stand alone. I didn't feel like I missed anything in the series, considering this is the first book of the series I read. Morgan and Kierland were very strong characters and worked perfectly together not only in the bed, but in their battles to save Kierland's brother from evil. I found myself getting lost in the storyline of this book. I felt like "a fly on the wall" as I watched this romance turn from pure lust to love and commitment. This book has it all, action, lust, romance, and death. I would highly recommend this if you love paranormal romances. I'm very anxious to try more of Rhyannon Byrd's work!

Virtual Book Tour: Downstroke by Desiree Holt + Giveaway

Writing a romance novel-the fulfillment of a dream…sort of!

People ask me all the time if I always knew I wanted to write or I always dreamed of being a writer. Well, yes. Sort of. I always had a fertile imagination. When I was twelve I told everyone in the town where we lived that I was going to Hollywood to star in a movie. (We lived in a small town and of course no one believed me!)

In high school I wrote a one act play entirely in French and I was always making up stories with my friends. Sometimes I would scribble these ideas down for “later” – no one told me that “later” really comes later.

Book Tour: Catching an Evil Tail by: Mary Abshire + Giveaway

Apr 9, 2011

Hello Everyone! Thanks for stopping by and reading my post.

I'm on a blog/book tour promoting my second Soul Catcher novel, Catching an Evil Tail. Today, I'm blogging about titles for my books in this series.

With the first novel, Claiming the Evil Dead, I made a short list and narrowed the titles with help from my daughter. The time involved wasn't much. Coming up with the title for book 2 was easier. Since Jessie is after a werewolf, I simply used the word tail and I thought "catching" sounded good with "tail". But did you notice both the first and second Soul Catcher novel have "Evil" in the title?

Ok, so it's now a habit to use that word, which may prove to be difficult as the series continues. At least, I'm thinking that might be the case.

The next book, Fighting Evil, is a general reference. But in future novels, I'm starting to have difficulty in finding titles. Yes, she's always sending evil souls to hell. That's what the main character does. But now, I question if I should continue to use the word "evil."

For starters, I don't want you/the reader to think my books are horror novels. Anyone who has read one knows they are far from it, but the title could be deceiving. Secondly, now that I've used the word three times, can I really change it and keep readers interested in the series? Will it throw you/the reader off?

I like the idea of using a common word in titles. It is kind of fun, but it makes for coming up with titles trickier and trickier.

For now, I'll stick with using the word in titles. But I'm curious to hear some feedback on this. Care to leave me a comment answering my questions above?
