Blog Birthday Love
By Scott Nicholson
http://www.hauntedcomputer.com/
Here I am at Jo Jo’s Book Corner for her first bloggy birthday party and I don’t have any presents except maybe a Kindle or some free e-books. *JoJo does Happy Dance*
I keep looking around expecting one of these hunky dudes to pop up out of a big birthday cake. All I know is I’m keeping my shirt on.
Part of the mission of the Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour is to celebrate book bloggers. They are doing more for reading than just about anybody else around, sharing a passion for books that sometimes borders on frenzy, especially when a big blockbuster like The Passage or Mockingjay comes out.
But bloggers like JoJo are also doing the important work of spreading the word about new books and authors who might be flying under everybody else’s radar. The newspapers don’t do it anymore, and the traditional press and book review magazines are vanishing. This is an important role that will only get bigger in the future, as the walls of the virtual world erode and we’re all mixed together like a puddle of melted Neapolitan ice cream.
The places we used to meet around books, like libraries and bookstores, have their own challenges and seem to have more digital media than paper books these days. And as the digital revolution continues, we might lose that personal connection that makes reading and sharing ideas so cool.
Sure, there are forums at places like Amazon, Goodreads, and Shelfari, but sometimes they are too big and it can take time to find your communities. That’s where bloggers like JoJo can offer a gathering place that still has personality, and the thousands of book bloggers can each build comfortable, inviting platforms for the people with similar tastes.
As an author and reader, I love bouncing around the different blogs. I love the wild creativity and the giveaways, the reviews and news, and best of all, the author interviews. Blogs are a cool meeting place that can change rapidly and stay current, and in the years ahead they will be helping create trends as readers gain more control over price and content.
And bloggers are also creating today’s bestsellers, with independent authors like Vicki Tyley and Amanda Hocking (I love her books!!!) getting a push from a few high-profile bloggers just when their sales were heating up anyway. Blogs add that personal touch that makes a big difference to the reading experience.
So a blogger like JoJo, who opens her home here on her birthday to a little-known writer like me, really matters a lot. Most of all, it’s fun to be here, because I can tell from this blog that JoJo is a warm, humorous person.
Sure, I’d love for you to buy all my books (psychological thriller The Skull Ring is this week’s over-hyped feature), but I’m happy just to be able to get out here on the Internet and be goofy a little.
Usually I am about 10 years behind the times, and once in a while ahead of my time, but as an author I feel the digital era, the book blog era, and independent publishing are colliding at the place where I am happiest and most free. And that’s worth baking a cake over.
Happy Bloggy Birthday, JoJo, and may you have many happy blogging years ahead. Now blow out those candles and let’s get this party started!

*waves* Hi
I'm stalking Scott *giggle*
But then again, I'm also stalking Jojo and all and every book blogger I can find, so I think it's fair...
I'm a book blogger aswell and loving it ;)
mayarend -at- yahoo.com.br
Hi Scott,
I so agree with you on book bloggers. I have been made aware of SO many fantastic author because of these wonderful people. Thanks
JoJo.
Full disclosure: I am not a blogger. Too computer challenged.
vsloboda@gmail.com
I feel like I'm stalking Scott too haha
kaitlynkline[at]gmail[dot]com
I tend to value bloggers opinions more so than the traditional book reviews and have discovered many wonderful authors through book blogs. I think it's great.
michaellmartinjr[at]gmail[dot]com
Bloggers opinions rank higher for me than regular reviews from websites.
FirePagesEditor@yahoo.com
Scott, don't slow down. I'll put a review out for Drummer boy as soon as I finish it.

What a great guy! Fantastic post! Happy Bloggy B-day JoJo!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway!
I love what you said about book bloggers doing the reviews that newspapers and magazines don't anymore. I hadn't really thought about it that way and am glad you opened my mind. I knew I LOVED book bloggers- but now I have a concrete (and social) reason!
kmorris at wildcatdiscovery dot com
I agree with the previous comments about blogger reviews being better/trusted more than other reviews because they've actually reviewed many books and give honest opinions about them.
lilazncutie1215[at]yahoo[dot]com
I love blogs I find so meny new books to read and a few contest two there so much fun as well .and /i love that there are other crazy book people like me out there.
Happy blog birthday!
sasluvbooks(at)yahoo.com
Scott has lots of stalkers! :)
Great post. I really love the book blogging community and am glad I found it. Its made finding new books and authors so much better and more fun. Plus with all the interviews etc that are done know you really get a feeling of the author caring about what readers really do think instead of just sales.

Getting back into blogging again and nothing like a good blog tour to get you in the mood :)
zoolinvaleAtgmail.com
I've read books before just based on reader reviews, ones I wouldn't ordinarily look twice at. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a good example of one I'm reading now and I'm so glad I did.
Keep up the great work Scott!
canadell@bellsouth.net
I have discovered so many authors through book blogs (clears throat - including present author!)
Alas, I have become poorer because of the blogs!
Thanks,

Wow! Fabulous giveaway! Count me in for sure! :) You can reach me at luvpinkpanther@gmail.com
Goofy is good.
Hadn't thought about the Kindle opening the door to new readers who are more likely to pick up a gadget than pick up a paperback. Also, it's nice to know other people who are crazy about books, like book bloggers. And who wouldn't enjoy wild creativity? Sounds fun, Scott. varbonoff22@cox.net
The author finding their way to the reader is opening up by bloggers
Following the yellow brick road.
It does feel a bit like stocking doesn't it.
I would love to know how much time book bloggers are spending reading, and blogging. It's pretty awesome. Also, do you read the books in full, or skim through to get a good flavor?
OK, when the blog opened up on my browser I started to wonder about Scott. "Hottie of the Month?"
Reason #1 Why eBooks are Potentially Better that Paperbacks: eBooks don't have a "memory" when it comes to re-reading the naughty parts. Paperback pages tend to get bent and creased every time you read the part about "Mary Ann Swallows releasing her gigantic bosoms as she grabs onto Rock Gunner's monstrous man-root!" Grab any well-read paperback, set it in you hand spine-down, and let it open naturally. If the book had any kind of "humma-humma" part, it will tend to open up to the section.
Of course, I don't know this from personal experience. It's what I read on a blog.
Happy birthday JOJO! I'm really deep into the internet community and have been since the 90's however I must admit that I had never visited a blogger's review site for books until frollow Scott's tour. I can't believe that's the case as blogging and book reviews are a match made in Internet Heaven(tm) but the thought just never crossed my mind. So I want to thank you Scott, for opening my eyes to a very useful aspect of the Internet.
calseeor (at) gmail (dot) com

Hi Scott,
Book blogs have introduced me to many new and new to me authors.
chey127 at hotmail dot com
Blogs have certainly been a wellspring for finding books that I'd normally never hear about. That may be how I originally became aware of Scott's writing.

Happy Bloggy Birthday JoJo!
And thanks Scott, for another stop on your tour.
lorraine_lanning[at]yahoo[dot]com
Happy Blog Birthday Jo Jo! Always fun to visit and stalking Scott just gave another good excuse to drop by (your regular posts are definitely a good enough reason to drop by though ;)
I like to promote the little known authors as well, but I tend to get overwhelmed with all the books I want to read! It's hard to choose which ones to read. But I think book blogging is really great because you get some honest opinions about books you may not have otherwise ever heard about.
candace_redinger at yahoo dot com
I've bookmarked a great list of blogs I take a peek at everyday. Have learned about new authors and their books, and have made many purchases after reading a great blog review.
caity_mack at yahoo dot com
When I first arrived on this site, the first thing I saw was the "HOTTIE of the Month". Gasp! WHAT!!??!! I was totally expecting it to be YOU, Scott! How shocking that it was some other dude (which is almost rude, since YOU are the --uninvited??--guest). Maybe your friend JoJo (and happy birthday to her from me--Scott 'crashed' your party, no doubt. He's such a cake whore!) has a special category for you--the "NOTtie of the Month"??? Oh my! Sexy! (Uh, RIGHT...) (Let's just HOPE we don't see any of your "left-handed puppeteer" work in any of the "NOTtie" shots that might get posted. NO ONE wants to see that. Trust me...
Have a groovy day!
CHEERS!
I am really enjoying the blog tour, finding all these blogs I have never heard of. Though I gotta be careful about overwhelming myself with so many blogs to read or my head will explode! :)

Scott, thanks for putting this tour together and introducing myself and others to these many fantastic blogs. I agree with you about the whole book revolution. It is a great way to get noticed for the writer and publisher.
Cheers,
~Dale
I have been stalking Scott for years. I think the only reason he doesn't have me arrested is that I keep catching his broken links (hyperlinks, that is, ha, ha). As an Indie author, I always enjoy finding new blogs!

This blog tour is fun! I did not know these sites existed. Happy Bloggy Bday, JoJo!
clharv {at} gmail {dot} com
I have found a lot of new authors by frequenting blogs. I trust bloggers more than review sites for info on new books.
Happy Birthday JoJo!
Hope the blog tour goes well Scott. I am starting to host blog tours on my own blog and am so excited. Many of the books I have recently read, I've learned about through blogs and I love reading the reviews. My TBR pile keeps growing!
ROFLOL - I really loved the "Hottie of the Month". Scott you called yourself a 'little known author', I'm so glad I found you!! Move over Stephen King and Dean Koontz!!

Hi Scott, thanks for another good post and keep up the steam on your blog tour!
tztomfromcali _ at _ gmail _ com
EGGGzacktly. I follow the book bloggers because they frequently blog books I never would have found on my own. The big-box newsletters I subscribe to are mostly filled with BESTSELLERS! or THE NEXT BESTSELLER FROM BESTSELLING AUTHOR X OF BEST SELLER blah blah blah!
Okay, I admit I read my fair share of BESTSELLERS! (currently finishing the Millennium Trilogy,) but I like finding great things that haven't already been bestsellered and movie optioned to death.
Anyways, rant over, carry on. :)

Thanks for the contest! And Happy Bloggy Birthday!

I'm thrilled that authors like yourself are recognizing and supporting book bloggers. These days almost every new author I discover is because of a review from one of the book blogs I trust. Thank you so much for that support and Happy Bloggy Birthday JoJo.
waitmantwillie at hotmail dot com
Happy birthday, JoJo, and thanks everyone for your comments and support. I can't answer each one right now but I do read and love them.
Also thanks to all who bought Speed Dating with the Dead today--it cracked Top 1,000. Still not enough push to get in top 100 but stay tuned to the tour because I have some ideas sure to get us some extra Kindles!
Scott
it takes time but it's a really good thing to find bloggers to follow because their reviews can be trusted. spvaughan@yahoo.com

Happy Bloggy Birthday to JoJo!
Scott, I'm really digging you being yourself right now in this new generation of "publishing." Keep it up!
-Neal, nealhock78@hotmail.com
Hi Scott!
I think book bloggers are an essential evolutionary step given the decline of newspaper and magazine reviews.
In addition, I think authors & publishers should work more with indie bookstores for promo fun (but then, I own a bookstore and am therefore biased) and profit.

I never used to follow any blogs, but since I got my kindle, I've started following a bunch of them. I don't know many people in real life who like books the way I do, and it's a lot of fun to find them on the net.
And, of course, enter me in the kindle drawing. :)
bluefrog62@yahoo.com
I follow way too many blogs. And with so many blogs are so many fabulous authors and so many hours in a day! AGH! <3 my Kindle (though it's only a 2) and Scott!
I would LOVE a Kindle DX. Thanks for the opportunity to win one! :)
P.S. Click on my name for my contact info. ;)
Another great stop giving me another author to read. Thanks Scott.
So excited about this blog tour. I'm finding so many fun new blogs and have found a great new author!

May you live long and write lots! ;)
Scott is absolutely right about book bloggers being the key to success for indie authors. We rely on their hard work to let the world know about our books, especially since most of us don't write mainstream fiction that is designed to appeal to the masses. Happy Birthday to JoJo's Book Corner and thanks to all you great bb'ers!
--Maria Romana
Happy birthday to you JoJo, love your site gonna have a look around for sure!
Scott, thanks again for doing this tour, I really hadn't really known about book bloggers before this. Nice to know there are so many readers out there even in this technological age.
Keep up the good work, both of you!

Happy birthday to Jojo's book corner!
Blogs and ebooks are making it possible for independent authors to truly take control of their books and not have to depend on a "publisher."
Love it!
stefanie647@msn.com
Since getting my Kindle, not only have I been reading more than I ever did, but I have also been having a great time finding new blogs and authors, that I hadn't previously known about.
I haven't had this much fun in ages. I feel like I have fallen into an alternate universe where everyone is just as book crazy as I am.

I agree that it's important to promote independent writers and/or self-published writers, etc. I've promoted a couple of independent authors this year and I plan to do more in the future.
Thanks for the giveaway!

Sometimes the only difference between a NYT bestselling author and an author nobody has ever heard of is publicity. I've read some pretty good books lately from "unknown" authors.

Happy Birthday to this blog.
Book bloggers--as Scott said--are important. These online places almost feel like a corner table or couch in a bookstore where you can just sit, talk genre, have a cup of coffee and just chill.
I have found so many wonderful authors from book bloggers. When I am looking for something new to read, they are usually who I turn to.

Scott, you said blogs are a great way to promote books (I agree!), so how did you find all the blogs you are visiting and set up the tour?
Margay1122(at)aol(dot)com
As a librarian I have to mention that our budget is shot. Hardbacks are usually about $24.95 and paperbacks are $7.99 on average. Money doesn't go as far as it used to. We are getting into e-books soon but there has not really been much demand here so far. No one has money to buy an e-book reader. Including me. Sigh.
kristiedonelson(at)gmail(dot)com
I agree. I didn't realize there were so many book blogs. I am new to blogging, but not new to computers. Guess I just don't escape from my digital cubical space very often. Great sight, although interesting spin with the Hottie. It was unexpected, seeing that. Keep it up Scott.

Hey Scott and JoJo,
I think this is a fantastic idea to go on a blog tour. I wasn't sure at first but I've subscribed to each book blogger with my Google Reader and I feel confidant that I'll pick up the rest of the blogs you visit. I wouldn't have done that without your tour. Thank you Scott.
And Happy Birthday to JoJo's Book Corner!

A couple of notes:
I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but you can try out the Kindle for PC absolutely free--
www.amazon.com/gp/kindle/pc
Download it, then a free book or sample one of mine (or buy The Red Church for 99 cents!--http://amzn.to/d0Lsa6) and put me in the Top 100 so I can double your odds of winning.
The desktop doesn't give all the advantages, obviously, since it's not portable and you're still staring at a computer screen, but it does give you a real sense of what it's going to be like when you win one...
Plus, you can buy my books and help me make money to buy you kindles with!
Authors, you can promote you work by getting in the Pandora's Box giveaway--details at http://www.hauntedcomputer.com/pandorasbox.htm
Thanks for having us, JoJo, and I hope we all meet again over coffee and Kindles and conversation.
Scott
I'm starting to recognize many of you--so keep dropping by the tour stops. Calendar will always be posted at www.hauntedcomputer.com and direct links at http://hauntedcomputer.blogspot.com

Great giveaway. I love Book Bloggers because it introduces me to books I might not have otherwise given a second glance, let alone purchase.

I place a lot of store in what book bloggers have to say. I find most of my books now through blogger links on twitter and Goodreads. Not only are the recommendations better, but I find books that aren't on the shelves at my library or bookstore and then request them. It's also really helped me now that I'm having health problems and can't stand and browse as much.
