The Wonderful World of Romance lovers
When JoJo asked me to blog, I had NO idea what I was going to blog about. I'm not an author, or even an aspiring author ~~ I'm a Reader!! And a true lover of all things about the romance community online ~~ so I decided that's exactly what I was going to blog about, how wonderful The World of Romance Book Lovers truly is!!
When I first got online, wow, I can't even remember the year, but I somehow stumbled onto the AOL folders ~ do you remember those? They were great, and the mods had chats a few times a week. I was lucky enough to meet some awesome friends in those chats and folders, friends that I still have so many years later, and still haven't met face to face!
I've been lucky enough to attend Lora Leigh's RAW, and Lori Foster's Reader event, and just a few weeks ago RT!! It was so wonderful at all these events to meet so many people who love books like I do, who measure time by the release dates of their favorite books, and to meet some of the wonderful authors I've loved over the years.
And to put faces to many, many friends I've made online for years!! Everyone is so friendly and fun, and whether you know anyone or not, you immediately feel right at home, because everyone is just as book crazy as you are! I'm constantly amazed at how lucky I've been.
About 7 years ago, my downstairs and garage flooded. It was awful!! I lost books I'd had since I was a teenage, and so many of my keepers ~~ I mentioned it to a friend online, and before I knew it I had books coming in the mail faster than I could shelve them to replace the books I'd lost! From authors, other readers ~~ it was so wonderful, and just so touching that people I'd never met face to face could care so much that I'd lost something precious to me. I've heard countless stories like this over the years ~ readers who have lost books to fire, flood, Katrina, and now Nashville ~~ and every time something like this happens, from an individual to a huge disaster, I see the Romance community, authors and readers alike, step up to the challenge and donate and try to help those in need out. It just makes me proud and happy to be able to say, Hey, I KNOW those people, I am a PART of something that solid and caring.
It makes me that much prouder to tell the world there is nothing I like better to do than to read a romance book, proudly!!
Have you made any lasting friends online? Know of any awesome good deeds done by romance lovers out there? What about sites you think we should go to to donate?
Here are a couple I know of right now that are wonderful causes ~~

Hi MiMi!!! I used to work as an AOL chat host several years back. Before that I was an AOL member in general and met many, many wonderful people, several of those I am still in contact with some of them 15 or so years later!! Once upon a time I had many of them come to Kansas City and we all got together to meet each other face-to-face. It was AWESOME!!!!
You and the other members of Dangerous Women are really awesome!!! I have really enjoyed being a part of it!!
Thanks Jojo for another great blog interview!!!

I love Dangerous Women Writing! What a fantastic group of authors. I'm new to book blogging, but I've already made some great book friends. I met my husband online 13 years ago, so that's a long-lasting relationship!

I have a friend that I met online about 6 years ago. We haven't met face to face but we talk everyday via email and twitter. My day feels empty without her presence.
I've grown fond of quite a few book bloggers. I know some of these friendships will last throughout the years as well :)
Hello! Thank you for a great post and giveaway! I have made many new friends online, and several of them are very good friends whom I hope to continue to have as pals : ) It's really wonderful to be in contact with so many people who share some of my same interests. It's also very interesting to read comments and get to know folks who have quite different interests and lives from mine!
You mentioned two worthy causes in your post, and I am already involved with Brenda Novak's online auction to raise funds for Diabetes research. A cause very dear to my heart is literacy, especially for young girls and women. Being literate is empowering, and it bolsters self-esteem and enables informed decision making. I encourage everyone to visit their local libraries and to support literacy programs in their own communities.

I've met lots of people on line that I feel close to but I still have that desire for the actual face to face interaction.
This is a great post. I have often wondered what I would do if I lost all of my books. I then think of those morons that burn books and it just makes me sad.

Sally ~~ I didn't know you used to be an AOL chat host!! I loved, loved those boards and those chats. Miss them still!! That is where I met my book guru, Fatin!!
Hi, Julie!! It's great to connect w/ people who have the same interests and want to talk about BOOKS w/ us, lol. Not everyone understands!!
Diana ~~ How cool you met your hubby online, and you're still together 13 yrs. later!! That would make a great book!!
Book Vixen ~ isn't it great that you can make form such lasting friendships w/ people you've met face to face? Yet if a few days go by w/ out chatting w/ them, you feel lost!!
Virginia ~~ I totally agree about literacy, I'm a huge supporter! Thanks for the links ~ I'll be checking them out! Do you remember the Judith McNaught book where the heroine taught literacy to adult women? I aspire to do that one day!
Victoria ~ Oh, it's scary loosing your books! They're like close friends I can depend on, lol, and when I lost so many that I'd had since I was a teenager it broke my heart! But having wonderful friends there for you makes a huge difference!!
I've met some great people online but I definitely prefer face to face meets.
I think a good site to donate to is Brenda Novak's online auction to raise funds for Diabetes research. Various authors donate fabulous prizes and things to bid on!

I have several on-line author-friends. The two that I e-mail most with are Caridad and JA Konrath. I have almost had face to face meetings with both of them - some day it will work out... I have recommended their books to other friends and family members more than other authors because I feel as if I know them as real people, not just names on a book cover.
I have some online friendships that have become great friends & I have lasted more thatn 7 years. Great interview.

Yes, I've made many acquaintances that has led to lots of great book talk and trading. Book lovers are very generous and I've seen numerous activities supporting the troops overseas and the fight against cancer. I'm proud to be a part of such a wonderful community.

jeanette ~ I love Brenda's auction!! And am currently winning on things I shouldn't be spending money on, lol!!
kmt ~ I haven't met JA, but Caridad is a doll!! She's so bubbly and full of energy and a true joy to be around!! Are you on the DWW loop? She's one of our awesome authors!!
Sue ~ thanks!! And wonderful you've made such lasting friendships!!
Lucy ~ be sure to come back to JoJo's blog this month ~ she's got some WONDEFUL authors lined up for her B Day bash!!
Marlene ~ How awesome is it that you can make lasting friendships w/ people from all around the world?
Joder ~~ I'm with you, I'm so proud of romance book lovers, and proud to be a part of something so awesome!
I haven't been involved with romance reader/writer communities long - but I have made many lasting friendships with people I met through scrapbooking online groups, and have been lucky enough to meet many in person. One who I've been friends with for almost 10 years I haven't met in person YET, but I consider her one of my best friends!
I've certainly made new friends through the romance blogging community! I love reading comments from the visitors on my blog & Cecile and I talk almost every day :D

I have met more people than I can count on-line, but I can't say any of them are lasting friends. I talk to them once, then go on to the next person. I love all the blogs I go to, also.

I personally choose to donate my books to schools that send care packages to soldiers stationed all over the world or to hospitals for oncology patients mainly but I'm sure anyone can use them :)
Great post and thank you for hosting!

One of my bestfriends was found when I entered a White Sox forum at the young age of 16 and he was 15. We realized we went to rivals schools and talked about our love of sports and mutual friends. Now 12 years later he is an exbf, my confidante, and one of my bestfriends.
Thank you for the post and for the giveaway!

I have just started connecting online, but don't have enough time to devote to it.
ainfinger@comcast.net
I've made some friendships online; time will tell if they will last long but I hope they do.
Though not necessarily romance lovers but several booklovers and I have collected books (and candies) for the troops. As a matter of fact, I'm boxing up books this weekend.
Thanks,

Have you made any lasting friends online?
--Oh yes. Hmm there's Kinbrae--we're going on to twelve years! and my "twin" Liz, who the introduced me to a bunch of other people who became my really good friends!
What about sites you think we should go to to donate?
--Any one that helps soldiers get books or children in devastated areas. My mother was in the army, served in the first Gulf War, and the one thing I remember her buying up when she got back finally was as many books as she could. The few the army had were so handed around they were falling apart and pretty old.

Have you made any lasting friends online?
I have made quiet a few friends over the net. But the one that has lasted the longest is with my friend Dani. We met on Myspace 4-5 years ago and have been talking every since.
littleredride.nhood[at]yahoo[dot]com
I have connected with old friends online and just recently started connecting with new people. Hopefully some lasting friendships will evolve.
beckerjo@verizon.net
I'm too leary about meeting people online.
Red Cross helped me when my apt. building had a fire and displaced us, so despite the flak it received (justly or unjustly) after Katrina, I still think it is a worthy charity.
acm05@juno.com
I actually became really good friends with someone that I met through myspace years ago!
dmkayes@gmail.com
I've begun talking with a few people online and maybe after I graduate from school I'll go on a nationwide book signing tour and meet some of these people.
Ddoogg04@aol.com
I talk to a lot of people online but still prefer face to face meeting.
I think the cancer society and the Humane society are two great places to give to.
