Sandra Sookoo Week: Day5: Character Interview + Giveaway
Nov 12, 2010
The Year: 2050
Location: Food Service Area onboard the starship Copernicus
Characters: Charlotte, Jax, Garreth from Blink
(I first sit down at a table with the very intelligent Garreth, of the Daridian's)
JJBC~ Can you tell us a little bit about what working with the humans is like? Do you enjoy it? Dislike it? Why
Garreth~Working with the Earth people is challenging at every turn. They’re not as advanced in every way as my people and rely too much on snap decisions. This is why their civilization will most likely never last.
JJBC~ Can you tell us your true thoughts about your time being controlled with your mate, and having to be scheduled?
Garreth~This is the best use of our time. The schedules keep my people on track, to utilize the most out of our day for learning. In this way we stay ahead of other peoples in the Universe. Only a few days of the month are set aside for personal times with our mates. This is how it should be.
JJBC~ Can you tell us a few things about how life as a Daridian was before the Jurikai came along?
Garreth~Oh, how I long for those days sometimes. Before the scourge found our planet, we enjoyed farming and other gentle pursuits. There was plenty of leisure time and much laughter. Life was…different then. Now we spent vast amounts of time inventing ways to defend against the Jurikai. This is for our survival only.
JJBC~Can you tell us what it’s like having to train the humans your technology?
Garreth~Frustrating! These humans do not want to learn. They believe themselves to be more experienced, more knowledgeable even when they are in the wrong. Emotions are always at play behind the scenes with these humans and it clouds judgment.
JJBC~How do you think your life has changed since you met Charlotte and Jax?
Garreth~I have learned humans spend too much time talking. Always talking and arguing. How have I changed? I understand them a bit better. This is concerning and I must think on it longer before I can make a firm decision.
(After that very delightful interview, I excuse myself and head of to the table where the very hansom Jax awaits me)
JJBC~What do you think about Charlotte as a captain?
Jax~I think Charlotte has too big a heart at times. Is she fit for command? Yes and no but once she believes in something, she’ll stick to her guns and won’t let up until Doomsday.
JJBC~What were your first thoughts when Garreth showed up?
Jax~I was extremely wary of him. It takes a lot for me to change my allegiance and Garreth didn’t instill trust in me at our first meeting.
JJBC~Where do you think your life would be if Charlotte had not come into it?
Jax~Tough call. Before I met Charlotte, I was driven to get up the command ladder as quickly as possible. I have a short fuse and it gets me into trouble. After serving with Charlotte for awhile, I’ve slowed down a little bit and think about things before going off—mostly.
JJBC~Is there something you would like to do besides working on the Copernicus?
Jax~Besides kissing terra firma? God, I’d love to just enjoy time off the ship for awhile. Kick back with a beer, maybe hit an actual gym or go fishing. But, this ship is my life and I’m pleased to serve for as long as it needs me.
(After I stop myself from drooling * clears throat* I mean interviewing the VERY HAWT Jax, I head over to Finish up with my individual interviews, ending with Charlotte)
JJBC~What is it like being the captain of your own ship, when it is not something you truly want to do?
Charlotte~Well, it’s a tradition in my family so I was pretty much born to be in the military in some capacity. I like the freedom of being able to go into space but sometimes the isolation of being stuck on the ship gets to me.
JJBC~If you had your choice, what would your rather do with your life if you were not a captain?
Charlotte~I’d like the opportunity to just do girl things like shopping for clothes that weren’t military issued. After that, I think I’d like to work in public relations on a planet. Would I miss the peacefulness of space? After awhile I think.
JJBC~What were your 1st thoughts about Garreth?
Charlotte~It’s actually kind of embarrassing. I thought he was very good looking, but of course then came the thought of why he materialized on my ship. Sometimes it’s a struggle to separate my head from my heart.
JJBC~Can you tell us about some of the aliens you have come across in your life?
Charlotte~Some of them have been great supporters of peace negotiations and knowledge exchanges. But some just make me shiver. Some only seek to destroy life of any kind. This is why it’s so important for Earth to keep going with its exploration.
JJBC~What is your favorite part about being the Captain?
Charlotte~I like taking care of my crew and everyone who works and lives on my ship. I like being a part of their lives and seeing how we all inter act together.
JJBC~Do you think you would have been as successful a captain if Jax was not around?
Charlotte~Hmm, that’s a hard question. Jax has always been there for me, to back me up when I run into shaky territory. That’s the wonderful thing of support. No matter what you do, they’ll always keep you grounded. Has Jax argued with me? Yes, but I don’t begrudge him that right. He’ll do very well in future endeavors.
(After I finish up with Charlotte, I call Jax, and Garreth over to finish the day off with a group interview)
JJBC~How do you think this experience has changed your life?
Charlotte~we always can learn something about ourselves from each person/being we meet. The day we stop doing that will be a bad one indeed.
JJBC~Sooooo the Copernicus bullet huh? any thoughts?
Garreth~this is an interesting drink. Its ability to lower inhibitions quickly is admirable.
Jax~I think it should be outlawed on the ship, or at least for people in charge. This is not a drink to play around with, especially when it can be manipulated by others.
JJBC~Can you tell us about your creator Sandra? Any secrets you can share with us today?
Charlotte~I have no doubt she’ll continue to tell stories that make folks really feel. That’s a great thing about coming into contact with Sandra. She told our story as if she really knew us.
Garreth~I certainly hope this author will continue to make others aware of the threat of the Jurikai. This race is not to be trifled with and they are dangerous. I’m sure there are quite a few stories that feature this war mongering race.
(I thank Charlotte, Jax, and Garreth for giving me their time today, and buy everyone a round of the Copernicus bullet......now that everyone is off duty for the day)

Thanks for visiting! And yeah, Jax is pretty handsome. I had a great time writing him :-)
I think having fun while writing characters is reflected in the author's work. If you can't have fun writing them, the character does not come to life. Thanks for the character interviews!

Thanks Jessica :-) BLINK was a new experience for me and I loved it. Now I can't wait to write another sci-fi book. You never know what will happen until you try :-)
