The H&W Team Talk About Travel
By Jess Haines
Hello there! Jess Haines here. I’m the author of the urban fantasy H&W Investigations series
HUNTED BY THE OTHERS
TAKEN BY THE OTHERS
and the upcoming
DECEIVED BY THE OTHERS [link: http://www.kensingtonbooks.com/finditem.cfm?itemid=19226]).
I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to some of the cast—Shiarra Waynest, the lead character, Sara, her business partner, Chaz, her on-and-off werewolf boyfriend, Arnold, a mage who lends her a hand, and Alec Royce, a vampire Shiarra meets in the course of her adventures.
____________________
Shiarra: I haven’t done much traveling since I was in high school. Used to go on family trips to visit landmarks like the Grand Canyon and stuff.
Sara: I traveled a lot when I was younger. Not so much anymore, except to visit my sister sometimes. She’s usually in England instead of stateside.
Chaz: Last year, I hit Tijuana for a long weekend.
Shiarra: What?
Chaz: You were on some big case. You said you couldn’t go.
Shiarra: I don’t remember you asking.
Arnold: Hey, hey, calm down over there.
Royce: Quiet, mage. I’m finding this rather fascinating.
Shiarra: Oh, shut up. What do you care, anyway? You probably hit Rio or Vegas or whatever every other weekend.
Royce: Actually, I avoid leaving my territory as much as possible.
Arnold: Don’t want someone to horn in on your action when you aren’t looking, huh?
Royce: An accurate assessment. Many vampires are opportunists, and we are more likely to use guile than violence to increase our holdings.
Shiarra: Huh. So you became master over New York—how, exactly? Aren’t you originally from Greece?
Sara: I bet he pulled a Dracula and came over on a ship, drinking from all the crew and passengers on the way.
Chaz: Dracula killed everyone on the ship. I bet fang-boy here did, too.
Royce: Lovely to see how kindly you all think of me. Truly.
Arnold: Does that mean they’re right?
Royce: Partially. I did originally travel to America via ship. I chose New York as my home in 1721, and have only left it sporadically. Perhaps once a decade since.
Sara: I’m worried about the crew. What happened to them?
Royce: No one aboard that ship died by my hand. There was a rash of dysentery that killed a few passengers, but that was not my doing, and a common enough occurrence during those times. After so many centuries, my hunger is easier to contain than you lot seem to believe. When necessary, I can go for quite some time without feeding.
Chaz: I’m sure that made everyone aboard feel so much better about having a life-sucking leech walking among them.
Royce: As opposed to being trapped with a mindless beast that would savage them upon the rise of the full moon?
Chaz: Hey! We aren’t mindless when we’re shifted, you know.
Royce: And vampires are not all murderous fiends, either. Watch your tongue, boy. You might offend someone who would be quicker to take retribution.
Sara: Damn. I was almost hoping for a good, scary story.
Shiarra: Um.
Royce: Believe me, Ms. Halloway, if you are in search of harrowing tales involving bloodshed and murder, you’ll find no lack of them if you study your own country’s history.
Shiarra: That’s boring. We want to hear something straight from you. C’mon, how many hundreds of years have you been around? You must have seen or done something gross in all that time.
Arnold: I went to Scotland on vacation once and watched a butcher make haggis.
Everyone Else: …
Arnold: What? That was pretty gross.
Chaz: I heard there’s a ghost tour in Philadelphia. Maybe we can take a road trip and check that out.
Royce: Fascinating, I’m sure.
Shiarra: You never answered Sara’s question. Have you ever seen or done something scary or gross in your travels?
Royce: Ms. Waynest, I’ve seen and done things that would turn the hair on your pretty head white. I’m not about to revisit those memories. Not even for you.
Sara: Lame.
Shiarra: Totally.

12 Hottie Follwers Thoughts:
I've read all three books in the series and enjoyed them. The only negative is the ending of Deceived...the dreaded cliffhanger! AHHHHH!
After meeting Jess and Binah last week I came home and bought the 1st book in that series. Looking forward to reading it.
I am so putting this series on my list to buy. These guys sound like fun. One day I hope to get to go to any romance conference.
