Halloween Bash: Day 2 with Author Stephanie Julian

Oct 25, 2010

I love Halloween.

I love the candy and the costumes, the chill in the air and the way the moon seems to hang huge and white in the sky.

And since I’m a TV addict, I love October for the movies and shows that have a Halloween theme.

'Glee' Does The 'Time Warp' @ Yahoo! Video

This week, “Glee” (Yes, I’m a huge Gleek) will do a “Rocky Horror” episode. I never get tired of the “Rocky Horror Picture Show.” I’ve been a fan for years, since my mom took me to a midnight showing when I was 14. My mom also got me hooked on horror movies and romance, so yay for my mom!

Then as a teenager, I worked in a movie theater for many years, and we held weekend midnight movie screenings of “Rocky Horror.” Not fun to clean up after but I can do the Time Warp like a pro.

Turner Classic has been showing a lot of the old Hammer horror films this month so I introduced my 15-year-old to Christopher Lee’s Dracula and now he’s hooked too. I’m anxiously awaiting the Vincent Price Poe films, which I figure have to show up soon. “The Tomb of Ligeia” and “The Fall of the House of Usher” are two of my favorites but there’s also “The Pit and the Pendulum” and “The Raven.”

Those films always remind of being a kid watching Dr. Shock on Channel 17 out of Philadelphia. I’d curl up on the couch on a Saturday afternoon and watch a guy dressed in a mortician’s suit and Bela Legosi makeup emerge from a coffin to do magic and introduce old horror movies.

My sons and I love to watch the “Ghost Hunters” live show on Syfy on Halloween night. This year they’re in Buffalo Central Terminal. Ah, Jason and Grant. Those two plumbers from Rhode Island clean up well.

Also Halloween night, I’ll be tuning in to the new AMC show, “The Walking Dead.” Who doesn’t like zombies? They remind me of midnight showings of “Dawn of the Dead.” George Romero is a master and his makeup artist Tom Savini has always held a special place in my heart. I know, I’m weird.

So, does the fact that I write paranomal romance come as any surprise? Fairies, elves, witches, shapeshifters. They’re magic. And who doesn’t want a little magic in their lives?

Giveaways
On Halloween night, I’ll be handing out treats to all the little ghosts and ghouls who knock but if you can’t come to my door, drop a comment here and JoJo will pick one to win a e-book of choice from my backlist.

Love Glee! Although joining the gleeks a little late, but I have finally caught up to season 2.

My favorite Halloween tradition is when you're done trick or treating my family would come home with our stashes and empty them on the floor with our arms and legs acting as barriers so our candy didn't mix.

Then we'd trade candy depending on what my sisters and I had. Usually I traded for kit kats or laffy taffy.

elaing8 October 25, 2010 at 12:15 PM

I can't wait for Glee this week. its gonna be awesome.

A tradition I did have was taking my nieces and nephews out for trick or treating every year. I'm not a big fan of the day but watching them get all excited was worth it.Now they are all grown, but my niece is dressing up her son for his 1st Halloween so this year will be special.

I LOVE Ghost Hunters! All those other shows (Paranormal State, Ghost Adventures and Most Haunted) are awful. However if it wasn't for the guys face on Ghost Adventures, he'd be hot...his body is yummy. I totally have a little crush on Grant from GH lol.

Victoria October 25, 2010 at 1:21 PM

I just don't seem to be able to get the hang of this virtual stuff. I'll keep trying :).
Love your post. I am a big fan of Poe and when I was a teen I was talking to my uncle about Poe's work. I had my uncle in stitches and didn't know why until he very loudly asked me "How much did you say you liked THE CROW?" It finally occurred to me that I said crow instead of raven. I turned Very red!

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 1:40 PM

Darla, we used to do that too. Now that I have my kids, the rule is Mom gets dibs on the Junior Mints and Baby Ruth bars. And I always get the Mounds because no one but me likes them. I love them. Thanks for stopping.

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 1:41 PM

elain8, my kids are in their teens now but I loved to take them out when they were younger. that was so much fun. enjoy!

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 1:43 PM

I've got a serious crush on Jason. must be the bald head. haven't seen Ghost Adventures yet, will have to check it out although I have seen My Ghost Story on ID and that was kind of interesting.

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 1:45 PM

Poe was my first horror writer crush, all gothic and dark and tortured. gotta love him. Now I think I need to pull out my Poe collection and read some.

Cathy M October 25, 2010 at 2:37 PM

My boys always loved putting on makeup with their costumes, the messier the better. Then they would come home, empty out the bags and organize candy by brand and color, before deciding what to eat first. That always had me laughing.

RENEE October 25, 2010 at 2:48 PM

My family all gathers at my mom's house with our kids to go trick or treating - and we all dress up. Some years we have various in-laws join with their kids as well.

I've caught a couple glee episodes...and I might get hooked, but the whole FOX / Cablevision battle may keep me firmly on the non-gleek status. The last time this happened with Food Network, I ended up no longer watching half the shows I had before the network held us cable customers hostage!

Anyway, I am so looking forward to Sunday.

Definitely will be watching Rocky Horror at some point this week!

Back to decorating my house! :) Ren

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 6:37 PM

Cathy, I love that they separate by brand! I used to do that and I always knew when my mom stole my reese's peanut butter cups.

Stephanie Julian October 25, 2010 at 6:39 PM

Renee, Glee is just so much fun but yeah, I love the original Rocky Horror.

JoJosBookCorner October 25, 2010 at 7:03 PM

Thank you so much for being here today Stephanie!!
I have to admit.....I've never seen Glee *ducks and hides*
I know I know.....what hole did I crawl out of right?!?! I have never seen True BLood either! *hangs head in shame*
anywhoo :0)
Thnk you so much for taing the time for being here today Stephanie!
And for those of you who havent read Stephanie yet, OMG you HAVE to read her Lucani series!

The Scarf Princess October 25, 2010 at 7:37 PM

I love Rocky Horror! I've put on numerous Rocky shows in my apartment and the clean up is time consuming. But it's alot of fun, so definitely worth it. I think Glee will do a great job with it since that clip was great. My favorite thing is the orange popcorn balls I always make. I gorge myself on them while watching scary movies. And I too am excited for The Walking Dead on AMC. The clips look great.

Oh my gosh...I loved Vincent Price!! And Rocky Horror Picture Show...can't see it enough times!

Haven't seen Glee or True Blood yet either...*ducking and hiding with Jojo* Love Halloween!!

JoAnna October 25, 2010 at 8:32 PM

I loved the game!
I love Glee as well. I'm really looking forward to this weeks episode!

Jennifer Mathis October 25, 2010 at 10:02 PM

I love the halloween shows but this year I'm roughing it without sat or cable so I have missed all of them :(

*yadkny* October 25, 2010 at 10:21 PM

Hi JoJo!
Our Halloween traditions are watching scary movies, carving pumpkins and roasting the seeds, and eating TONS of candy:)

Beth October 25, 2010 at 10:46 PM

The only tradition we ever had for Halloween is that I made the kids costumes most years. Till they got 'too old for that stuff', except the youngest. At 20 she still likes me to help her with a costume.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:16 AM

Bad JoJo! you gotta watch, if only for the over-the-top everything but mostly for the singing. I'm a Broadway fan so whenever they do a show tune, I'm loving it.
And I'm a recent True Blood convert, but I'm devout.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:18 AM

joder, send some of those orange popcorn balls my way. I LOVE those but I haven't had one in years. Now, I'm going to have to track one down. Or maybe make rice crispy treats. yum.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:20 AM

SallyS no need to hide, but if you like naked hot guys, you gotta watch True Blood.

I'm not much for Bill (my son does a wicked awesome Sookie imitation) but Sam, now, him I like.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:21 AM

JoAnna, thanks for stopping.I loved that game too. I didn't know they made those things and now I'm hooked. And probably pathetic.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:22 AM

Jennifer, my condolences. I don't know what I'd do without my cable and DVR. I'm such a slave to my TV but I don't care. It loves me back, I'm sure.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:23 AM

yadnky, I'm with you on the candy. I know I shouldn't eat so much but I can't seem to stop myself. Those Baby Ruths and Reese's Peanut Butter cups just all to me. And Sweet Tarts. Ooh, I love Sweet Tarts.

Stephanie Julian October 26, 2010 at 6:25 AM

Beth, I wish I could have been that creative. The extent of my costume making was asking my mother in law to sew it. she's much better at that than I am.

Bells October 26, 2010 at 6:42 AM

My favorite Halloween tradition is making cupcakes with the kids. We buy all kids of toppings and add what we want on them. We also make pumpkin ice cream. You add a can of pumpkin filling to vanilla ice cream and mix it together. It's so good!

CrystalGB October 26, 2010 at 10:53 AM

We love to carve jack o'lanterns, make popcorn balls, and watch Halloween movies.

Jenn October 26, 2010 at 9:34 PM

I don't watch a lot of tv or movies, so haven't even gotten into some of the hot paranormal shows that are out now. I do love PNRs though!

Stephanie Julian October 27, 2010 at 6:40 AM

CrystalGB, I didn't get to carve any pumpkins this year but that's always one of my favorites. I might have to bring one home today and carve him up.

Stephanie Julian October 27, 2010 at 6:42 AM

Jen, PNRs are definitely year-round reading for me too. I'm reading No Mercy by Sherrilyn Kenyon right now, then it's on to JR Ward's Crave and Shayla Black has a new book out that I must pick up today and next week a new Nalini Singh!

Virginia C October 28, 2010 at 1:22 PM

October is my favorite month, and Halloween is a hoot and a howl : )
