Halloween Bash: Day1 with Author Cat Johnson

Oct 24, 2010

Thanks, JoJo, for inviting me to play on your blog today. You asked my favorite part of Halloween. Actually, I think I like everything about Halloween. The autumn leaves, the cold crisp air, going pumpkin picking, seeing mums, colored gourds and Indian corn in the stores...it all adds to the feel for me. Not to mention the tons of chocolate in all shapes and sizes! And not to be totally unhealthy, I truly love roasted pumpkin seeds and apples, which are everywhere this time of year. And of course, I’m always up for dressing up. My friends and I try to do a theme. We were the cast of Gilligan’s Island one year. This year we might be the cast of the Jersey Shore at a 20 Year Reunion. LOL. I still need to buy my Snooki Bump-It!

My favorite Halloween Movie is totally “Nightmare Before Christmas”. Hell, we all know that after Halloween is over, it’s Thanksgiving and then Christmas so fast you can’t keep up with passing days anyway, so why not celebrate both in one movie! I love the music of Tim Burton. I can’t think of that movie without hearing “Hey Mr. Santi Claus…” in my head. My second favorite Halloween movie is “Hocus Pocus” with Bette Midler. I love when they sing “I Put a Spell on You”. Best Halloween song ever!

GIVEAWAYS
To celebrate Halloween, today I am giving away a paperback copy of the now out-of-print paranormal multi-author anthology Witches Night, filled with short sometimes spooky, sometimes hot, witch-themed stories by some of your favorite authors, including my “Black Cat”.

Halloween Game

Today’s game is “Carve a virtual pumpkin”. I see some of the works of art people create out of real pumpkins and think 1) that is GREAT, and 2) there is NO WAY I can do that! Maybe I’ll be better at the virtual variety. LOL. Commenters, you all get the chance to play the same game, and everyone can vote on them on Halloween day so make sure you go and play. Email a screen shot of your pumpkin to jojo @ jojosbookcornerATgmailDOTcom
(TO GET A SCREEN SHOT, on your game window press Ctrl + print screen, go to windows paint and paste. save and email to JoJo , Please put VIRTUAL PUMPKIN CARVING in the subject

Pumpkin carving was fun and a little difficult cuz it's virtual. Lot of fun though.

Well I always liked watching all of the Halloween movies that would be shown leading up to Halloween and on Halloween we pass out candy or we take my friend's siblings trick r treating.

Thanks for awesome event and sharing.

Hey Darla and Victoria!
It was quite a challenge drawing/carving with the built-in mouse on my laptop, I can tell you that! I'd probably be better off with a knife and real pumpkin and risk bodily injury! LOL.

Oh well, it was fun anyway!

Hey JoJo! Thank YOU for having me today.

I don't go crazy inside but I do love a few special decorations that I put out every year. One is a framed picture of my best friend's kids from when they were very little and she took them to a pumpkin farm where there was this HUGE pumpkin and they let you sit the kids on it and take pics. That goes in a special place each year. Then I have this ceramic kitchen witch thing that I think you're supposed to leave out all year for good luck, but I only put her out at Halloween. A few other things, like fun Halloween dishtowels in the kitchen and some candles and that is the extent of my decorations. It's all I can do to get them out and then put away again before Christmas hits!

Hey Wanda!
Thanks for stopping by.

I love Hocus Pocus. I've been know to skip around the house signing 'Amuck, amuck, amuck, amuck" after watching that movie! LOL.

So glad you liked Black Cat. I love that story. Still one of my favorites after all these years. It was written for the Witches Night multi-author anthology way back in 2006 I think, then that anthology went out of print and I made my Black Cat story a free read, but the paperback is full of some really fun and different stories. I think my favorite was one about a very naughty little witch by Barry Bryan.

I love all halloween cartoons ( yes I can watch the great pumpkin charlie brown is a marathon) I had so much fun with my pumpkin but it turned out just like real life mines all crooked and deformed lol

JoAnna October 24, 2010 at 11:33 AM

I'm terrible with Pumpkin carving. Not at all creative, I even suck with the patterns they give you. Always tend to mess them up. :) Always end up carving the boring face on the pumpkins.

We started a yearly tradition a few years back. We go to the local farm and take a hayride to their pumpkin patch to get some pumpkins. It is lots of fun the and the kids love it.

Cat Johnson October 24, 2010 at 12:05 PM

Hey JoAnna, Jennifer and Kelly,

Yeah, pumpkin carving seems to be hard whether they are real or virtual! I did my cat pumpkin at least a half a dozen times before I had one I was kind of happy with. At least on the computer I couldn't cut myself with the knife!

Hayrides are fun, but the sad thing is, they are usual pulled by tractors nowadays instead of horses. Oh well, progress I guess.

Thanks for stopping by!

I love Hocus Pocus, too. What a good movie!

I tried my hand at the pumpkin carving. It looks like I suck at virtual carving as well. lol I couldn't figure out how to copy it though. Ugh--But I carved a cat, gravestone and moon and star.

I used to have the kid just paint the pumpkins instead of carving them. It eliminated bloodshed. lol

Enjoyed the post and the pumpkin carving. :)

RENEE October 24, 2010 at 12:31 PM

Hi everyone...I carved poorly, but carved I did.

My favorite Halloween tradition is going around trick or treating. I get dressed up every year since I was little and now I go with the kids.

I still remember going one year in college...going up to a house and having the door answered by a couple girls in middle school. As our group (2 college juniors, 1 soph, 2 freshmen) walked away, we heard them running in to their mom saying, "see I told you we weren't too old...those were high school kids"! My thoughts are, if you come to my house dressed up, you're never too old to Trick or Treat!!!

RENEE October 24, 2010 at 12:33 PM

Oh...Hocus Pocus and Rocky Horror Picture show are 2 of my fave movies to watch at Halloween time!!

:) Ren

Yah I tired the pumpkin game, but will not share my poor skills at drawing. If you ever need one photo enhanced, I am your gal *winks*.

throuthehaze October 24, 2010 at 1:38 PM

Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus are some of my faves too!
I don't have any Halloween traditions but one of my favorite memories was when I got to dress up as Raphael from TMNT. I thought I was so cool :)

Kasumi October 24, 2010 at 2:17 PM

No Halloweenn traditions for me: We don't celebrate it in Spain. But all the years there are any film in tv about it, so, maybe that is my halloween tradition :D

But, carving is not for me. I can do nothing! That game is no for me :(

The Scarf Princess October 24, 2010 at 2:39 PM

Since I'm the complete opposite of Martha Stewart, I didn't carve a pumpkin for everyone to see. I started but it was looking very sad.

Anyhoo, my memory is of a particularly freezing Halloween where I was dressed up like a patient with an IV and everything. It was so cold that my fake IV--made out of a ziploc bag--froze. We went to a few houses, but had a lot more fun back home with hot cocoa with orange marshmallows, orange sugar cookies, orange popcorn balls, and scary movies.

My kids and I played with the virtual pumpkin carving for hours - sadly, our talents at virtual carving suck almost as bad as the real thing!

Nightmare Before Christmas is our all time fav holiday movie - my son Jack has a whole Jack Skellington room theme! (Mmmm purple, black and green - every mother's dream!)

This time last year our gal pal group was in New Orleans for Halloween! We went as a group of Merlotte's waitresses (practical really, tennis shoes and shorts when dancing is a good thing!)

I am pumpkined out today so didn't carve. I spent the weekend doing Halloween things with the kids including pumpkin painting.

Please enter me in the contest though.

Michelle Stockard Miller October 24, 2010 at 7:21 PM

I love The Nightmare Before Christmas too. So do my sons. Great movie!

The virtual pumpkin carving was fun! I emailed it to you. Thanks!

SallyS October 24, 2010 at 8:51 PM

My all time favorite Halloween movie is Hocus Pocus. I giggle everytime I see Sarah Jessica Parker do the amuk amuk amuk thing, lol. I'm also a huge Bette Midler fan so this is a double goodie for me! I bought it for my grandkids this year. My daughter says they have watched it about every day, lol. The pumkin carving was fun...thanks for the link Jojo!

jeanette8042 October 24, 2010 at 10:21 PM

I totally agree with favorite Halloween movie as Nightmare Before Christmas! Such a great movie and I watch it every year! And the virtual pumpkin carving was fun!

Beth October 24, 2010 at 10:58 PM

I like The Addams Family myself. And my 20yo daughter still watched the Halloweentown movies every year.
I like the virtual pumpkin carving. Couldn't do exactly what I wanted but I'm going to keep trying.

Linda Henderson October 24, 2010 at 10:59 PM

I love watching Hocus Pocus and Charly Brown's Great Pumpkin, it's a tradition to watch them every year. I didn't even attempt the virtual pumpkin carving, I've got a new computer and I'm still trying to figure it out.

My 20yr old daughter managed to get "Disney Halloween Treat" on a USB stick...a fave from when she was little. I think she'd watch it every Halloween for the entire month of October.

We watched it last night...so many memories from her childhood!

Cat Johnson October 25, 2010 at 8:07 AM

WOW! Look at all the great comments.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by and sharing your Halloween memories and our apparent mutual lack of pumpkin carving skill--I feel much better now that we all suck at it!

LOL.

*yadkny* October 25, 2010 at 10:11 PM

My fav Halloween memory is when we did a haunted house at my house in both the basement and the garage. My mom had just given birth to twins 5 days prior and the party was awesome. One of those memories you just never forget.

My favorite Halloween memory is when my 2 oldest sons were old enough to go trick or treating. My oldest son has a best friend that was a girl and they would literally run to each house to see who would ring the doorbell first! They were so out of control that the mother of the girl and I would just stand there a laugh. It was all in good fun and they had a great time. They would do this the next couple of years. lol

CrystalGB October 26, 2010 at 10:37 AM

I love carving pumpkins with the kids. It is a lot of fun.

Jenn October 26, 2010 at 9:38 PM

I haven't done much for Halloween in the past decade or so. This year I'm dressing up (more like accessorizing) and going to a big crazy Halloween fest we have every year. I remember not-so-fondly as a young teen being scared half-to-death by my dad - he loved to don a scary Freddy mask and sneak up on my and my friends. It's a wonder I'm not in intensive therapy lol!

heidi330 October 27, 2010 at 12:10 PM

I really liked playing the pumpkin game.. My 4 yr old son really liked it..favorite thing to do for halloween....I enjoy decorating each year.. plus I really enjoy taking my baby out trick or treating, we have so much fun walking around seeing everyone before winter sets in. Also there is a nice older lady who makes handmade pulled taffy every year so all the kids have to go to her house. She's been making it since I was a kid going door to door. Its a real treat.
Thanks Cat for the post.. hope to see ya Sunday!!

Andrea I October 28, 2010 at 1:13 PM

I'm going to try the Pumpkin Game. We don't decorate and giving out candy depends who's at home. I'm usually gone to a Halloween Party. As far as movies, I'm not much a a movie person.

The virtual pumpkin carving was a lot of fun, but I couldn't get the image to "hold". My family has always had a lot of fun with Halloween. I still enjoy giving out candy, even if my house is the only one with a porch light on! I used to carve a Jack O' Lantern every year and make a pie from the pumpkin--yummy!
