Modern Fairy Tales: Reason to Believe
First, I’d like to thank JoJo and Tigris Eden for inviting me to be a part of the 30 Days with a Highlander event! I’m Diana from Book of Secrets and The Forbidden Bookshelf, and, of course, I’m crazy about Highlanders. Usually when I think of Highlanders in romance novels, I picture the brawny kilt-wearing, sword-wielding warriors of long ago. But what about modern-day Highlanders? Can a girl find a real life laird to fall in love with today? The lucky heroine of REASON TO BELIEVE by Leslie Ann Dennis did just that…
From REASON TO BELIEVE:
“Just in time,” he said with a lift of his eyebrow. “Or I might have put my other idea into play.”
A pleasant shiver skittered through her. “And what idea would that be, pray tell?”
“To imitate my barbaric ancestors, maybe swing you over my shoulder, and carry you to my bed for the remainder of the night.”
She suddenly forgot how to breathe as her mind conjured up images of Conlan, having just returned from a fierce battle, dressed in his MacGregor hunting kilt of faded red and green tartan; his hair a mass of braids and loose locks; his steel-gray eyes glowing with lust for her. A savage warlord.
About the Book:
Lane Douglas is a rational, independent woman, too busy running her interior design business to even think about letting a man into her heart. Her ordered life is turned upside down when her grandfather falls ill. Poppa is convinced his health is tied to the health of a tree planted in Scotland in his honor. They receive a letter from the landowner where the tree is planted stating that the tree is diseased and will be cut down soon. To please her grandfather, Lane heads to the Scottish Highlands to confront the landowner despite the fact that she doesn’t believe in silly superstitions. To her surprise, the landowner turns out to be the handsome laird of Wolfscrag Castle, Conlan MacGregor. The two of them sense an immediate attraction. She convinces him to let her stay at his castle while they nurse the tree back to health. As Lane and Conlan grow closer, she is unable to resist falling for the alluring young laird.
I really fell in love with this captivating story. REASON TO BELIEVE is everything a modern fairy tale should be: a sexy hero searching for the woman who will make his life complete; a strong heroine holding out for the right man to win her heart; and a magical story set against the backdrop of a Scottish castle in the Highlands. The tale is interwoven with Scottish folklore, and I love the clever way the oak tree was linked to Lane’s grandfather. The characters’ personalities really popped off the page. Lane and Conlan’s passion for each other felt very real (and very hot), even though their relationship wasn’t always perfect. Lane could be cantankerous at times, and more than once I wanted to smack her and say “can’t you see this amazing man before you?” REASON TO BELIEVE is a wonderfully romantic tale, and if you’ve ever dreamed of becoming a laird’s lady, I would recommend escaping into this book for an afternoon.
My Rating: 4 Stars!
Thank you again to JoJo and Tigris Eden for inviting me to the Highlander party! I leave you with one of my favorite kilt photos that I’ve found on Tumblr, because you know that one of the biggest thrills of seeing a man in a kilt is imagining what he’s hiding underneath.
