30 days of Highlanders: Day 3: Guest Post with Book Addict Patti + GIVEAWAY!

Apr 28, 2011

(image via Men in Kilts)
*Sigh* Who doesn't love those sexy men in kilts? I've certainly spent plenty of time swooning over fictional Highlanders. Some of my favorite Highlanders are written by Karen Marie Moning. Now, her Fever series gets plenty of love (as it well should, lol), but a lot of people don't realize her Highlander books tie into the Fever series; the fae and those sexy MacKeltars have important parts in both series.

What do I love about Karen Marie Moning's Highlanders? They're honorable, smart, stubborn, caring, sexy, loving, and strong. The heroines are all from modern day, and they each end up going back in time, so....that gives me hope that this could really happen. It could, right?

Here are the books in the order Ms. Moning suggests reading them, with description from her website in italics:

Beyond the Highland Mist
is the story of Hawk Douglas and Adrienne de Simone. Hawk's best friend is Grimm (a.k.a. Gavrael Roderick Icarus McIllioch). Adam Black makes his debut in this novel. I loved Hawk and Adrienne, and Adam Black was the super-sexy blacksmith that wanted Adrienne and almost ruined their HEA. We meet most of the fae that appear in later books and the Fever series.

To Tame a Highland Warrior is the story of Hawk's best friend, Grimm and Jillian St. Clair. Although Adam Black is not overtly present here, he is responsible for the Berserkers. This is the only book in the series that I don't think has anything to do with the Fever series. Still an enjoyable read, and Grim is soo sweet...

The Highlander's Touch is the story of Circenn Brodie and Lisa Stone. Adam Black has a significant role in this novel. This book was so much fun! Adam Black brought Circenn items from the future; things like a CD player, tampons, and batteries, and Circenn's use of them is sometimes comical. Lisa goes back in time via a faery flask, and Circenn is supposed to kill the man who has it, which makes things difficult for their romance. This one was bittersweet because Lisa's mother is sick and she wants to go back to the future to be with her.

Kiss of the Highlander is the story of Drustan MacKeltar and Gwen Cassidy. Though Adam Black is not overtly present, the Tuatha De' Danaan's role in things becomes clearer. Oh, Drustan! Kiss of the Highlander and The Dark Highlander are my two favorites in the series. Gwen is a fabulous heroine - spunky and fun. I love how she's searching for her "cherry picker" while on a tour of Scotland, and instead finds a 500-year-old Scotsman, who then drags her back in time. This book has one of the funniest "wedding" scenes I've read. It's also the first book in the series to show the Druid Binding Vows *swoons*...

(I think this is the first book where we meet a young Christian MacKeltar, although it might not be until the next book)

The Dark Highlander is the story of Dageus MacKeltar (Drustan's twin brother) and Chloe Zanders. It is Adam Black's interference in this story that causes the Queen of the Tuatha De' Danaan to punish Adam in The Immortal Highlander. Daegus is devastated over actions he took to save his brother, and the punishment that resulted from those actions. He must live with evil inside of him for eternity, until the evil takes over and he is lost to it. Enter Chloe, whom he finds crawling around under his bed, and bam! Instant heat! We also get to revisit Drustan an Gwen, which is nice.

The Immortal Highlander
is the story of Adam Black and Gabrielle O'Callaghan. Yes - Adam Black gets his own story, and his self-importance almost ruins it for him!

The Spell of the Highlander is the story of Cian MacKeltar (Drustan and Dageus' ancestor) and Jessi St. James. Cian is the oldest highlander, I *think*. At least, he's been trapped the longest. Cian was tricked by an evil sorcerer and has spent hundreds of years inside a faery mirror, only able to come out when a certain spell is said. His mirror is stolen and sent to America, where Jessi ends up letting him out to save her life. When he's out, it's only for a few minutes or hours at a time, so they race against time to prevent him from having to go back into the mirror permanently, and in the process fall in love.

This whole series is on my "keeper" shelf, and the audiobooks are to die for. Phil Gigante narrates, and his voice is verra, verra sexy. Here's an audio sample of Beyond the Highland Mist (it takes a few seconds to get past the female narrator).

I've only read a few Highlander books so far but I loved them! I started with Kresley Cole's series. The fact that the women in this series go back in time has me intrigued. How do they handle the "he man" attitude of the time period they're now in? This is going to be good :).
