Bite Me—Everything You Need to Know about Non-Shiny Vampires

Hi, everyone! (And a big thanks to Jodie for inviting me over to chat!)

Today, I want to talk about vampires. Not the shiny, slightly broody vamps (though I know many, many folks area addicted to Edward). Instead, I want to talk about a rougher breed of vamps—think Spike. Think Angel. Think—no shine.

So here are some lessons that I have learned from paranormal romance novels and Buffy:

1. Men with super sharp teeth aren’t afraid to kick ass. Really. They won’t just bite you. They’ll make you wish you’d never been born.

2. A vamp’s bite isn’t necessarily a sexy thing. Don’t get me wrong, a bite can be sexy (I sure try hard to make some of the bites in my books sexy), but, depending on the vampire, it can also be a brutal attack. So don’t run around saying, “Bite Me!” (um, yeah, like I did in the title of this blog) unless you are ready for some pain.

3. Vamps are sexy, with or without a sparkle. They’re rough, they’re immortal, and they are extremely cheap dates. No food at a fancy restaurant is required. All these guys hunger for is…well, their companions.

4. Immortal=he’s still older than you! So you might think you’re a cougar, but no, sorry, you don’t get that title yet. Because despite that vamp’s youthful appearance, he still has about 100 years on you. You are not robbing the cradle. Sure, you may be robbing the grave, but not the cradle.

Are you a vampire fan? Got any lessons you’d like to share with me? Bring them on! J I’ll give one commenter an autographed copy of my July paranormal romance, I’LL BE SLAYING YOU.

Thanks!

I'll Be Slaying You

Sandra “Dee” Daniels is a vampire’s worst nightmare. Sure, she couldn’t get up to five-six in the highest heels money can buy—not that she ever wears heels. But the monsters in her past and the stake in her boot are enough to keep most bloodsuckers interested in staying undead out of Baton Rouge.

But there are changes afoot on her turf. Rumors of a Born Master in town—a vampire so powerful he can make the streets run with blood. And a new face in Dee’s dive bars and alleyways—Simon Chase, a strong, sexy shadow with a haunted past of his own. Simon knows a lot about the dark side of Dee’s work. He knows even more about how to make her body spark with desire. But the hot lust shimmering between them is only the beginning. Because Simon also knows a secret that will change Dee’s life—if she can live long enough to uncover it.

OMG....this book ROCKS!!! You guys are going to luv Luv LUV it!!!

I have been a Vamp lover for eons! Never try to fool a Vampire. Not only do they have supernatural sight and hearing, they can detect each beat of your heart. They can sense, and savor, the blood flowing through your veins. No matter how cool, calm, and collected you may appear, a Vamp will always feel the heat under your skin!

Suzette June 8, 2010 at 7:49 AM

First off, Happy Birthday.

I love vampires and have for some time now. Prefer my vamps more like Angel and Spike then Edward but everyone has their own opinion.
As for a lesson, hmm Just because they are sexy, doesn't make them good. Even Spike and Angel, sexy as they are were bad at one time. So watch out for the sexy, EVIL vamps. Those are not the ones you want!

Many years ago when a friend introduced me to The Dark-Hunter series I became obsessed with vampire reads! Their my favorite in this genre! tWarner419@aol.com

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 8:56 AM

Hi, JoJo!! Thanks for inviting me to your birthday bash! And happy birthday!

Virigina, that is some fabulous advice!! And your vamp knowledge is top-notch!

Thank you, Suzette! :-) And you are so right--folks need to watch our for the sexy, evil vamps!

Tetewa, those dark-hunters are fabulous. So addictive.

Andrea I June 8, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Happy Birthday Cynthia!
I just found vamps last year when I picked up Adrian Phoenix's Rush of Wings. I was hooked and added urban fantasy and paranormal romance to the genres I read.
I have read about both types of vamps and enjoy them all.

Anonymous,  June 8, 2010 at 9:54 AM

My lesson is that no matter how sexy or good or evil, a Vamp will always break your heart or love you to death. So your choice is simple, die of a broken heart or let the sexy vamp love you to death.

Love your lesson #4 -- Been a vampire fan since the original Dark Shadows!! I think one lesson (drawn from the old B&W movies) would be don't stare into their eyes (unless they are totally HOT!)

aromagik June 8, 2010 at 10:01 AM

I'm definitely a vamp fan, and I agree -- lesson 4 is a good one! ;)

I've been a vampire fan for many years and even though sometimes I used to get real odd looks from people who saw what I was reading, I've never stopped. Any lessons?

Happy birthday to both of you. I Do like Vamps. And I have some advice/lessons. Never invite a vamp over for spaghetti and garlic bread.

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 11:21 AM

Thank you, Andrea! Oh, I've heard great things about Rush of Wings!

LOL, aroudenbush, vamps can love you to death. So true.

Shelly, I can't wait for the new Dark Shadows! I'm so looking forward to seeing Johnny Depp as a vamp.

Hi, Lindy! Glad you liked lesson #4.

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 11:21 AM

Great advice, Diane!! Because those vamps have to get hungry eventually, right?!

Those vamps are so addictive, Robin!

Hey, Sherry!! Ha! That is fab advice! Unless it's an evil vamp, then I think your garlic shaghetti would be very nice.

Sweet Vernal Zephyr June 8, 2010 at 11:36 AM

I'm a vampire fan and happen to have my very own personal vampire at home waiting for me... though he does get a bit sensitive when I mention his elongated canines. So Sexy!

Happy Birthday's all around! Miranda

I'm a huge vampire fan, and figure my son maybe qualifies as one... since he sleeps all day and always come home with marks on his neck. (He is 15.)
I suggest wearing a garlic necklace or bracelet, or if you are lucky enough to find vervane... (Thanks Vampire Diaries!)

Barbara E. June 8, 2010 at 1:21 PM

I've been a vampire fan for quite some time. I love other paranormal creatures, but vampires are #1 in my eyes. The lesson I want to share is that a vampire will protect the one he loves, so you can feel safe when he's around.

Getting closer to the big day JoJo. Must say that I have been a vamp-lover for over 25 years. My first being Dracula. I love the Dark-Hunters and Spike was my all time TV Vamp. That said, my lesson for Vamps is the same for men...Why buy the cow when they get the milk for free...Never let a Vampire drink from you until you have the full package.
Looking forward to reading I'll be Slaying You!

I've loved vampires for over 35 yrs. They are so damn sexy. Lesson: Never deal w/a vamp. They'll twist things their way. Also, enjoy them - the sex must be AMAZING! I really want this book. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

I am a complete vampire fan. I would rather have vamps in my books than just about anything else. They make such great and intriguing characters. Really looking forward to reading Ill Be Slaying You.

Thanks for sharing today.

Jason June 8, 2010 at 2:40 PM

Love vamps! And in my experience, they are all at least a little bit Bi...

thanks! jason@jasonkivela.com

Ms. Asphyxia June 8, 2010 at 2:54 PM

Love vampires, even the neck ripping and growling kind. Okay, not so much the face changing kind, or the sparkling kind... but... the rest, yes!

I think it is important to remember that vampires are immortal. To you they may be the end all and be all of your life, but to them you are only a blip. I mean, after so long they have met a lot of women and men, and probably had a lot of relationships. To them, the years you spend together may feel like days in the scheme of things. So you're really going to have to work hard to make them notice you.

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 5:07 PM

Hi, Miranda! :-) But that vamp at home is awesome!

fredamans, I often worry if teenagers pass through a vampire phase.

JoJo, I definitely prefer the hot vamps! And not sharing a vamp is always a good idea!

Thanks, Colleen! And so glad you like the cover--it is one of my favorties.

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 5:07 PM

Oh, good lesson, Barbara! Those vampires can be so wonderfully protective.

Hey, Karia!!! That is fun advice!!

Nice lessons, Victoria!!

Hi, donnas! I think vamps are intriguing characters, too. I always wonder...what were they like in the pre-vamp days?

Cynthia Eden June 8, 2010 at 5:08 PM

Thank you, Ina! I feel your pain on the growing wish list--I have that same problem.

Hey, Jason!! Nice to meet another vamp fan.

Valorie, I must confess I liked Spike when he put his "game face" on. :-) Though I liked him better without it.

Thank you, jeanette!! So glad you enjoy my books!

Cathy M June 8, 2010 at 5:08 PM

I am a huge paranormal fan and have to thank Christine Feehan's Carpathian's for getting me hooked. Especially like vampires as the tortured hero waiting centuries for that perfect love.

Have a wonderful birthday, Cynthia.

Lesson 1: Do not get a paper cut near Jasper. He'll try to eat you... and not in a good way. ;)

Lesson 2: Never bet on a foot race against a vampre... you'll lose.

Lesson 3: Flipping a stiff middle finger at a rogue vampire that ticks you off and telling them to bite you. Not such a good idea, they may just give you more than just a little love nip and then where would you be? Bleeding to death on your freshly washed carpet. That stain will never come out.

omg I've been a vamp fan for more than 30 yrs lol back in the it was Linda Lael Miller and Maggie Shayne who started me reading vamp romances and i've been hooked every since. Love your books and would love to win this one.

CatsMeow June 8, 2010 at 10:04 PM

WOOHOO!!!. Another chance to win a signed copy of I'll Be Slaying You. I have all your books and LOVE them. Thanks for giving us this opportunity.
Happy Early Birthday JoJo and Happy Birthday again Cynthia.
Of all paranormal romance characters, I think vampires as a whole are the most intriguing. They definitely pull off HAWT, sexy, and if I'm lucky, a great sense of humor (just what I look for in a man/"Other"). Lesson: The brooders should lighten up. Life's too short. oh wait, that doesn't apply here.

Thank you, CatsMeow! LOL, you are right--brooders need to lighten up! why be broody? Just be sexy and fun.

Happy Birthday!!!! I have been a vampire fan since 1967 when I zipped hope from school to see vampire Barnabus Collins and learned to understand how to pity them trapped in time warps without the love of their lives. And to understand them not fear them just being debonaire and wiser than any man you can ever meet.

buddyt June 9, 2010 at 6:41 AM

I am a vampire fan but I must admit that at the moment I am tending to avoid any books/TV/movies about them.

Ijust find that for me personally it has all got too much at the moment.

Think I will have to turn to elves, trolls, dragons etc. for a while.

Thanks

I'm a Vampire fan.
Good thing as my in-laws are from Transylvania and most of them are allergic to garlic!!
And on that note my advice would be that if you are going to marry someone with origins in Transylvania chose the one who loves garlic but faints at the sight of blood.
