30 days of Highlanders: Day 10: Interview with Paula Quinn + Giveaway

May 5, 2011

Paula Quinn lives with her husband and childhood sweetheart in NYC. They have three children, four dogs and a rescued Umbrella cockatoo. Paula's passions are Scotland, history, and anything involving swords. She is currently at work finishing up her Children of the mist series.

-Did you get to travel to Scotland or Ireland for any research?
No, I’ve never been to Scotland, but I plan to remedy that next year. I recently received an email from the current MacGregor chief’s wife inviting me to the MacGregor highland games to meet her husband. Exciting!

-Which of your Highlanders was hardest to write?
Oh, this is such a good question. I had days with each of them that were difficult to write-for different reasons. Callum MacGregor from LAIRD OF THE MIST was hard because of the anguish I felt from him. I cried during most of his scenes. The MacGregor proscription is historical fact and what was done to them was truly heartbreaking. Callum’s son Tristan from SEDUCED BY A HIGHLANDER was probably the most difficult because he had so many hidden layers. Outwardly he’s a reckless rogue, the prodigal son, but inwardly he’s a knight in shining armor. It was hard getting him to show me how wonderful he truly was.

-Do you have any secret obsessions while writing you can‘t live without?
Yes, but if I told you, I would have to kill you. :)

-Can you share with us any highlanders your currently working on?
I’d love to. I’m currently working on the fourth installment in the Children of the Mist series. This one will feature Colin MacGregor, the youngest of Callum and Kate’s bairns. We met him briefly in RAVISHED BY A HIGHLANDER and TAMED BY A HIGHLANDER. Colin has always believed that he was born for a purpose. His passion for the sword, for blood, and for winning any battle sears his veins and when he fights, he feels invincible. Since James of York’s coronation three years ago, Colin has spent each day in his service, either at the king’s side and at his back, or at the ear of the king’s enemies, learning their secrets and contemplating their demise. A soldier in a quiet war, Colin is sent to infiltrate the home of an enemy to learn the plans of King James’s nemesis, William of Orange. It will be easy. He’s battled a hundred different opponents and ended many revolts before they became threats to the Stuart throne. But when he meets Lady Gillian Dearly, the cousin of the man he must betray, he isn’t prepared when he must battle himself.

-What got you started in writing about Highlanders?
I’ve been asked many times why I chose to write about Scotland. I didn’t. Scotland chose me and so did the MacGregors. I was perfectly happy writing about knights in medieval England, but Scotland, or more specifically, the Isle of Skye, haunted me. That and a nameless, faceless Highlander whose presence I felt while writing every page of every book that wasn’t Scottish. He was, of course, Callum MacGregor, and as I researched this mighty, resilient clan, I came to love them and their history.

And let’s face it, what woman doesn’t love a Highlander? For me, as a writer and a reader, there is nothing more intriguing than a Highland hero. It’s association by terrain, by culture, and by sound. Scotland is a land of rugged, timeless beauty and windswept moors, resilient against centuries of subjugation. The terrain makes them hard, tough, and robust. Their culture makes them proud, stubborn, and fearless. A Highland hero is the ultimate alpha male, confident in his own power and appreciative of the strength in his woman.

-Can you describe to us your dream highlander?
Sure. Any one of my Highland heroes is my dream Highlander. He has to be tall and rugged, of course. He has to be sure enough about his own masculinity to appreciate a strong woman, and he has to have a good heart. All my heroes are good men, the type who will stick around when things get bad, who love their lass with their whole heart. Strong legs are a must too! A plaid swinging around two sticks isn’t very appealing, you know.

-Who is your darkest Highlander / Who is your mildest Highlander?
My darkest Highlander is definitely Callum MacGregor. He says, in his own confession, “I dinna seek fergiveness fer my many sins. My road to perdition has been long and my iniquities, too numerous and too savage fer redemption. There is naught in my soul but darkness, and I am driven by one purpose, to kill those who have created this beast no one dares call a man.

My mildest Highlander…hmm, none of them are mild, but I would have to say that the most light-hearted of them all was Graham Grant from A HIGHLANDER NEVER SURRENDERS. His unflappable charm and careless attitude about anything that wasn’t wearing a skirt made me smile. A lot.

-Can you tell us about your Highlanders twitter style? (140 characters or less)
Tweeted by Connor Grant (hero of TAMED BY A HIGHLANDER)
“Satan’s balls, she’s grown more bonnie than when last I saw her.”

-How do your highlanders differ from others?
I think they are ruled more by honor than say a typical Highlander of that time might have been. I grew up on stories of Arthur Pendragon and his Knights of the Round Table and all my heroes have bits and pieces of those legendary men inside them. Some of them might initially scoff at these ancient ideals, but eventually they all come to realize that they are or want to be better men because of the lasses who steal their hearts.

-Are your highlanders paranormal or just historical, and why did you choose that path?
My Highlanders are purely historical though I love paranormal and hope to write in that genre (as well as continuing with straight historicals) soon. I chose to stick to history with this series because there’s nothing I love more and this clan has one of the richest histories out there.

-What would the colors of your Tartan be?
The MacGregor tartan is red and green or red and black.

Loved the interview, I love Paula's highlanders, they are my favorites in this genre. Always a good choice when you pick up a book written by Paula!

Natalija May 5, 2011 at 8:48 AM

Greetings from Italy! Thank you for this wonderful interview.
I am a big fan of highlander romance books. I have a question to Paula: If you could be any of your heroine’s who would you be?

Victoria May 5, 2011 at 9:46 AM

Hi Paula - I have a copy of RAVISHED BY A HIGHLANDER in my TBR stack. I haven't read many highlander books yet but the few I have I've really enjoyed. Thanks for being here - I loved your interview :).

Great interview! I've never read any of Paula's books, but I'd love to try one. Paula, which authors do you like to read in your downtime?

Paula Quinn May 5, 2011 at 10:07 AM

Hi Ladies,
It's so nice to be here :) Jojo, thanks so much for having me. The interview was lots of fun!

Waving hi to Marissa! It's so nice to see you here, doll!

Natalija, ah, Italy, my grandparents homeland. :) If I could be one of my heroines it would definitely be Kate from Laird of the Mist.

Hi Victoria, thanks so much for stopping by :)

Jen, hope you get to read one of my Highlanders and tell me what you think :) In my downtime I like to read Lynn Kurland, Madeline Hunter, Julie Garwood, Karen Hawkins just to name a few :)

I loved this interview. Makes me feel like I know Paula better. We have a lot in common~I love anything Scottish and especially would love to have my own Highlander to love. Love all your books and look forward to more.

June M. May 5, 2011 at 11:11 AM

Thank you for the interview and giveaway. Good luck with the upcoming release. I love reading about highlanders! They are just so sexy! ;D
My question would be is there any other genre that you are interested in writing?

manning_j2004 at yahoo dot com

Paula Quinn May 5, 2011 at 11:21 AM

Hi June, thanks for stopping by :) Yes, I'd love to write some paranormal historicals!

JoJosBookCorner May 5, 2011 at 11:54 AM

Hi Paula!!! *waves* thank you so much for coming! I can't wait to one day go to Scotland myself! I told the hubs we ARE going! lol
I'm currently devouring Seduced by a Highlander *dreamy sigh* I <3 Tristan
*huggies*
JoJo

Highland Hussy May 5, 2011 at 12:37 PM

Hi Paula, I'm also reading Seduced by a Highlander :)

What made you switch the series up by writing about the Children? Why not add more to the Laird of the Mist series (Macgregor's series)

Paula Quinn May 5, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Hi Jojo! Thanks so much for the opportunity to be a guest :) So glad you're enjoying Seduced. I loved writing Tristan, even though he drove me a little crazy. He was worth it :)

Paula Quinn May 5, 2011 at 2:27 PM

Hi HighlandHussy, (love your name) My publisher wanted a longer series and there just weren't enough characters to make something interesting. Kate's brother, Rob and Anne already had much of their story told in A Highlander Never Surrenders, as did Callum's sister Maggie and Jamie. as much as I loved Brodie and Angus, I wanted some fresh faces. The Children of the Mist series gave me a chance to have that :)

Danielle West May 5, 2011 at 2:28 PM

Hi Paula! I just love all of your books! Your highlanders are just so lovable- even if they do not want to be :) I wanted to ask if you hurt for Mairi when you were writing her book? Everytime I read the blurb or the exerpt I just ache for how much she hurts. The love of her life left her in the dust and she has to hear about his bedroom legends and then she has no more dreams of anything but fighting. Regardless, I am still super excited for Tamed and cannot wait to see a redemption :)

holls May 5, 2011 at 3:15 PM

Awesome interview! I love me some highlander!! Thanks

Hollybwright at comcast dot net

Paula Quinn May 5, 2011 at 3:42 PM

Hi Danielle,
Thanks so much for stopping by :) Yes, I did hurt for Mairi while writing her. Like her, I fell in love with my childhood sweetheart and though we've been inseparable since, I did understand how Connor's leaving her would have torn her apart. But Mairi's strong and she makes Connor pay! Well, she tries to. Among other things he has dimples, and he knows how to use them! :)

Texas Book Lover May 5, 2011 at 5:44 PM

These books sound terrific too! Jeez when am I going to find the time to read all these great new autos?

RFTC Blog May 5, 2011 at 5:44 PM

Paula is actually a new to me author but after reading this post I will definitely have to pick up her Highlander books. They looks really good and she has definitely got me wanting to know more about her MacGregor clan.

Hi Holls, thanks so much for stopping by :) I hope you get a chance to read my work!

Maria, I have no time to read either, so I know how you feel. Thank you for stopping by :)

Paula Quinn May 6, 2011 at 9:45 AM

Hi Danielle and Meggerfly, thanks so much for stopping by to say hello. let me know what you think if you get a chance to pick up a book of mine :)

Hi Goddess, yes I did almost pee my pants and then I squealed and jumped around lol. When I wrote Laird of the Mist (my first MaGregor book) I wanted people to know about this incredible clan and what they went through during the proscription. Getting the letter from the chief's wife was a dream come true!

Paula Quinn May 6, 2011 at 9:47 AM

Hi Chelsea! So nice of you to drop by :) I'll second that comment!

Sheree, these books are straight historicals but I'm hoping to write paranormals in the future :)

Hi, Paula,
If Tamed by a Highlander was made into a movie, who would you want to play the main characters?
marlenebreakfield(at)yahoo(dot)com

buddyt May 7, 2011 at 6:04 AM

Somehow in all that has been said about Highlanders I can't remember seeing any comments on their beloved instrument the bagpipes.

What are peoples thought on bagpipe music ?

Thanks for the giveaway.

Paula Quinn May 7, 2011 at 1:27 PM

Hi Johanna, thanks so much for stopping by! xoxo

Mbreakfield, oh, such a good question. Well I'd have to pick the people I saw in my mind while writing Tamed. Connor would be played by Josh Holloway and Mairi would be Natalie Dormer from the Tudors. :)

BuddyT, I LOVE bagpipes. I cry every time I hear them.

BLHmistress May 7, 2011 at 4:49 PM

I received Seduced by a Highlander for a RAK and I can't wait to read it. I have had this series on my list for awhile so when I got this in the mail I squealed :).

If you had the opportunity to write with anyone who would it be?

Thank you Paula for a wonderful interview. I have not read your books yet, but hope to really soon. My question is what type of research did you do to write the way they talk? I have pictured in my mind an author watching lot of you tube videos....LOL!

I just read back through and realized I wrote autos instead of authors. Damn cell phones!!!

paula_quinn May 9, 2011 at 3:10 PM

Hi BLH, thanks so much for stopping by! So glad you recieved SEDUCED. Hope you enjoy Tristan and Isobel's story as much as I loved writing it. If I had the chance to write with anyone it woul dhave to be Julie Garwood. Love her!

paula_Quinn May 9, 2011 at 3:15 PM

Hi Maria. Such a good question! I've enjoyed writing a lot of certain scenes. It's hard to choose just one. I think writing the epilogue in TAMED was my most rewarding scene because we get a sneak peak at the MacGregors in an ordinary day :) I'm also loving lots of scenes in my current book CONQUERED BY A HIGHLANDER. I don't want it to end!

paula_quinn May 9, 2011 at 3:24 PM

Hi Trish, so glad you enjoyed the interview :) I have an MP3 of the Scottish poem/song The Ballad of TamLin, done by the Melborne Scottish Fiddle Club (I've had it for years) You can really get a feel for the burr. I also did lots of reserch on words but didn't want to overdo it in my books. There's a fine line between giving the feel of Highland speech and confusing folks.

Here's a link to Tamlin if you want to hear it. It's great!

StacieDM,  May 9, 2011 at 3:28 PM

Hello Paula!
Callum sounds like my kind of Highlander. I love a dark and tortured hero.

Do you have a particular actor or model that best represents your idea of a perfect muse for a Highlander?

Thanks for the great giveaway!

user1123 AT comcast DOT net

Paula Quinn May 9, 2011 at 6:31 PM

Hi Stacie,
So glad you stopped by :) To answer your question, yes, Gerard Butler. He was Callum for me. A bus with his picture on the side (as Attila) nearly ran me over when I was trying to envision Callum. My muse won't hesitate to get my attention when needed,

Camille May 10, 2011 at 6:24 AM

I do love a good highlander story and I've had your book recommended to me Paula and it is on my to-buy list! My tbr is ridiculous though but I swear I'll get to it lol
