What makes you pick up a book and read and/or buy it?
~Cover ?!?
~Reviews ?!?
~Recommends ?!?
~Blogs / Websites ?!?

For me personally, I’m bad at buying a book by its cover. I know……horrible right?!?! But I just love those yummie hotties on the front! *giggles* Me?!?! Looking at the hotties?!?!…….NEVER?!?!
Ya ok ok we all know me and my love of the hotties.
But Most of the books I have bought, I have picked them up because something has grabbed my interest on the covers. Now My thoughts are, How does this effect the Authors? Many don’t have a choice in picking their covers. So are there great books out there that don’t get the credit they are due, because they may have a horrible cover? Are there books out there that you have read, that you wouldn’t have bought in a million years if it weren’t for the cover?
So what about you ? What makes you pick up a book and read and/or buy it?

The initial pick up is the cover. If the cover grabs my attention i'll take a look. Then i'll read the synopsis on the back. If that intriques me, then i'll buy it. Sometimes i need to look at the blurb inside the front cover. Other times i need to read a page or two.
Some series i just buy them because of the series...such as Star Wars. I'm a huge SW fan and get every novel that comes out in the series.
Sometimes i go off of recommendations, but not nearly as much as my own first impressions.
That make any sense?

I also a big book review recommendation girl. Well thats good since I write them eh? lol
I also default to my Goodreads newsfeed alot and when my friends have given 4 or 5 I pay attention and peak at their thoughts.

Scott~ That makes perfect sense. I do pretty much the same. If its an author i love i buy no matter what. But i have found so many new authors but their covers grabbing me.
And no......they don't ALL have hotties on them!

Michelle ~ I hear that! I love tearing apart goodreads! As a reviewer myself, i do try to read some reviews, but i am not a big reader of others reviews. I normally check out reviews of the books i really want to read just to get others opinions, but other than that have seen too many spoilers in some reviews so i try to watch which ones i read. But on the other hand i have purchased some by reading reviews.
Yeah...authors are instant buy for me too. Oh I'm sure the covers don't all have hotties on them *rolls eyes* LOL
If it's not from an author I already love then blog recs and author recs will get me to pick up and buy a book.
I pick books up because of the first 5 reasons on the list. I think it's a shame when a great book gets a crappy cover. Even worse when you buy a book for the great cover and the read is disappointing. I've only started getting books with hotties on the covers, probably a lot of that has to do with your site too, lol. All in all, as humans, the visuals are our first instincts, so publishers have to take that into consideration when making the covers; the bolder, more attractive, the better. What's weird is when the cover image has absolutely nothing to do with the content (no examples come to mind, but I'm sure it happens).
