Halloween Bash: Day 4 with Author Samantha Sommersby
Oct 27, 2010
Halloween Memories:
We have a Halloween tradition of making Chili and cornbread and carving pumpkins. One year, when my son was about five, we invited the neighbors over. At the time there were four other couples in the neighborhood with children between 5-9. It was a rare, stormy night in southern California. We spread newspaper out on the kitchen floor, got all of the kids and parents set up, then lighting hit the transformer outside and the entire street was plunged into darkness. We carved the pumpkins and ate by candlelight, told silly ghost stories, and laughed until our sides hurt. My son has grown (he’s 17 now), and although the chili and cornbread recipes are the same, the carvings have become more elaborate. Last year he and hubby decided to put road flares in the pumpkins in lieu of candles. The affect was amazing!

Sam’s Chili and Cornbread
Chili – slow cook the following for 2-3 hours on top of the stove
2 lbs lean ground beef (browned)
2 medium onions (chopped)
4 cloves garlic (minced)
2 teaspoons coarse ground black pepper
4 large cans of stewed tomatoes
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 cans of low sodium beef broth
Cornbread – I use a premade cornbread mix and follow the instructions on the package but add ¼ cup of diced canned green chilies and ¼ cup of grated Monterey Jack cheese.

The Revolution
[Forbidden, Book 3]
Cursed by magic. Betrayed by lies. Bound together by love.
Twenty-five years ago Dell Renfield’s father started a revolution, and Dell plans to finish it. Sorcerer, vampire, secret weapon, he’s spent a lifetime training for his fate. The one distraction he isn’t equipped for? Special Agent Alexandria Sanchez. A woman he desires above all others—and a woman he dare not get close to.
Alex’s love life is already cursed. She doesn’t need the added complication of a sexy new partner. Especially one who’s touch is literally magic. Posing as his lover for the sake of their investigation is pure hell—and pure heaven. Now if she can just get him to quit casting spells long enough to prove she&quo;s capable. And keep her hands to herself in the process.
As they infiltrate a dangerous culture, temptation becomes too much to resist. And their torrid affair triggers an epic battle for power that could forever alter the future for them...and their kind.
Warning: This book contains spectacular magical ass-kickings, copious amounts of blistering sex, one super-sexy, gun-toting heroine, and a very delicious, very powerful sorcerer...who sometimes sports fangs.

15 Hottie Follwers Thoughts:
My mom would alternate between chili and sloppy joes for Halloween! Such great memories.
I like the cornbread idea...I just might try it this weekend.
Thanks for the excerpt...sounds like fun!

Sloppy Joes are a great idea! I haven't had one of those in years.
My kids hate them...so ends a tradition!

What a cool thing to happen while carving the pumpkins. Like the chili idea. I usually do mummy dogs and bloody fingers ;).
We make a big pot of red beans and rice and cornbread, with caramel apples for dessert.
Caramel apples - something else I haven't had in ages!
Sam
We do the soup tradition too. We make chili and chicken n' dumpling soup for Christmas Eve every year. It warms us up and amongst all the craziness, it's easy and relaxing to make.

We don't have a food tradition for Halloween. We do go to a pumpkin patch to pick out pumpkins instead of just buying them at a store.
We haven't carved pumpkins at my house in years. Although I love looking at what other people have carved into their pumpkins.

I like the chili and cornbread idea. But I add a little bit of honey to the cornbread. I like mine moister than most mixes will be and with a touch of sweet.
MMMMMM--Chili and cornbread! Perfect for a cool Fall evening : )
The hot peppers in the chili will burn off the calories from the candy ; )

Sounds like the lights going out turned out to be a good thing - love those unexpected bad things where the silver lining is better than how it would have been!
