Adrian Paul, My One and Only Highlander
by: Ms Missy Jane
For those of you unfamiliar with the television series, The Highlander, the name Adrian Paul may hold no meaning. He was in the last of the Highlander movies, continuing his role as Duncan MacLeod (of the clan Macleod), alongside the original highlander, Christopher Lambert (Connor MacLeod). He’s been in forty-one movie and television productions ( http://www.imdb.com/ ) and is also listed as a producer and director. Born in London from Italian and British roots, he pulled off being a Scottish Highlander vera vera well. Watching him swordfight in everything from a kilt to a three-piece suit has been some of my favorite television watching experiences.
So, why is he my favorite highlander? As an actor he’s middle-grade but seems to put his heart and soul into it. Though I’ve only seen him in a couple of roles other than as Duncan MacLeod, I actually had the opportunity to meet Adrian at the Romantic Times convention of 2008. He was awesome. He attended as a VIP guest to promote awareness for his children’s charity, The Peace Fund. He easily upstaged VIP Fabio in my eyes (who was also awesome), and had the mostly female audience in a tizzy. He told a couple of funny stories about his experiences as an actor and especially his Highlander role. He mostly spoke about his foundation and it was obvious that it has a lot of meaning for him.
As I sat and listened to Adrian Paul, secretly undressing him from the gaudy purple suit he chose to wear, one thought was foremost on my mind. No, not that one. It was “I have to get his autograph for my husband!” My husband is the one who introduced me to the Highlander television series as well as the movies. He’s a huge fan of them and Adrian Paul. I’m pretty sure he has a man-crush on Adrian but haven’t gotten him to admit it yet. When he found out Adrian would be at the convention, he almost made arrangements to go with me. Luckily he wasn’t able to because ogling the Ellora’s Cavemen in front of him would’ve been awkward. So, I felt an obligation to get something to take home to show my sweet hubby that I’d remembered him.
I bought a glossy, black and white photo of Adrian the day before and had it ready, but once he was finished talking the room erupted into chaos. Women leapt from their chairs and bombarded the stage, each vying for the hot Highlander’s attention. I swiftly left my seat and elbowed my way to the front, stomping through authors I’d been fawning over the day before in my mad dash to gain an autograph. A sense of guilt tried to emerge but I pictured my sweet hubby sobbing if I arrived home empty handed and continued my trek. Within minutes there was a slight pause and I leapt onto the stage with my photo in hand. I told Adrian I needed his autograph for my husband so he wouldn’t get mad at how much I spent on the trip. He laughed, used my back to sign the photo and said, “Put it on your credit card. He’ll never know.” (swoon) Somehow I made it off the stage without falling at his feet.
After the initial mad rush, order was called to the room and everyone was asked to take their seats and have dessert. As the women dispersed and Adrian stepped down from the stage, I took the opportunity to get his attention once more. I tapped him on the arm, gave him an apologetic grin and said, “Sorry, we thought you were dessert.” It was hard to tell from the glare of his purple suit, but I think I might have made him blush. Needless to say my hubby was thrilled with the photo and even overlooked the mound of pictures I took of the Cavemen. However, he was a little upset that I had Adrian autograph the Highlander novel to me instead of him. Oh well, I’ll just have to meet the Highlander again ;-)

Have to be honest I never cared for Adrian. I was so spoiled by Lambert that I couldn't get into Paul.

Have to admit that I did not know who Adrian was...I don't watch much TV at all. Generally, I read for entertainment.

Ladies, thanks for commenting. It's okay that you didn't know who Adrian Paul is (or prefer Christopher Lambert). Honestly if it wasn't for my hubby I wouldn't know either. But now that I do...yum!
How funny you writing abou Adrian Paul and Highlander. I watched it when it came out and I've been watching the occasional episode on Hulu at work when I'm doing piece work. I'm only up to episode 11 of season 1, but it's great because it's been so long they're like new to me. He truly was eye candy (saw him in a recent movie, he had a horrible dye job and hair cut, buit he seemd to be holding up pretty well).

I loved that series and I was trying to think of the stars name but couldn't.
Thanks to you, now I remember.
I haven't seen him in any other series or movies which is rather a pity.
