30 days of Highlanders: Day 9: Guest Post: Colette from A Buckeye Girl Reads + Giveaway

First Book Crushes
By: Colette from A Buckeye Girl Reads
I want to begin by saying thank you to JoJo’s Bookcorner and Tigris Eden for inviting me to do a guest post for the 30 Days of Highlanders. I’m Colette from A Buckeye Girl Reads, where I review a little bit of every genre-especially Paranormal Romances and Urban Fantasy.
It’s funny how sometimes whole genres can pass you by until you read that one book that changes everything for you. For me, I never got why people swooned over men in kilts. That was until I met one Jamie Fraser. You might have heard of him-he was in a little book called Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Friends had been trying to get me to read this book for years before I finally broke down and read it. It took me three tries to read it. I just didn’t care about a WWII nurse named Claire and her husband Frank. The first 100 pages of so I kept going: “I just don’t understand the fuss about this supposed great book.” Then something happened. Claire fell through time and we met Jamie Fraser.
( This is how I picture my Jamie Fraser to look like)
I think it was love at first sight and my first book boyfriend was born. I’m not sure if it was the kilt, the innocence of Jamie or the way that he called Claire Sassenach, but I wanted my own highlander and I think I finished that 900 page book in a record 2 days. I then went on to read all of the adventures of Jamie and Claire. I’m still not sure what sold me so completely on highlanders, but from that day on I could not get enough of those men in kilts.
My love of highlanders has led me to some really good highlander series, such as Karen Marie Moning’s Highlanders and Joanna Lindsey’s and Julie Garwoods highlander historical romances. It’s also led me to bad highlander books, and some cheesy but delicious highlander books. I still have to try Janet Chapman and Kresley Cole~sometimes I just come late to the party. I’m still not sure why it took me so long to get on the highlander bandwagon or why I love those scoundrels, but they are in my heart forever now. Who was your first highlander crush?
The book that made me love highlanders:
Outlander by Diana GabaldonThe year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon--when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach--an "outlander"--in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord...1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into intrigues and dangers that may threaten her life...and shatter her heart. For here she meets James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, and becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire...and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

23 Hottie Follwers Thoughts:
Hi Colette! that's the actor I have in mind for Jamie too mmmm
what book made me love highlanders? I gotta give it to Karen Marie Moning's To Tame a Highland Warrior (bk 2 yes but then I got bk 1 and read the rest in order ;P) Now I'm a huge fan of Karen Ranney who writes fabulous highlanders and and Marsha Canham, Diana Gabaldon notwithstanding amongst other wonderful writers- like Kimberly Killion of course ;)

Hi Colette & Jojo!
Great post Colette! I actually have 2 copies of Outlander - 1 paperback & 1 ebook version & I still haven't read it! I'm terrible, aren't I?
Well it was my Bestest Jojo constantly talking about Highlander hotties that got me to finally break down & read one. It was actually a novella from Carina Press (received for review) - the name of the book is "Laird of Darkness" by Nicole North.
I love that novella & the hero was such a sweet tortured hottie that I just fell in love - great strong heroine too but oh do I love the Laird of Darkness!
Since reading that one I've started making a list of Highlander books recommended by my favorite bloggers. It become quite the addiction & I never imagined I'd even like this type of book. Now here I am all about the men in kilts!
Again thanks for the great giveaways & obviously I am loving the 30 days of Highlanders!!!

Now I'm off to Tigris Eden...
Hi Colette -
I have that 100 page rule. No matter how much I don't like what I'm reading I give it 100 pages. It has saved a few for me ;).
My first Highlander was Kresley Cole's. Loved them.
vsloboda(at)gmail(dot)com
Mine was Monica McCarty's Highlander Untamed
I have to know-- who is that actor you have pictured? He looks perfect for the role!
Outlander is what sold me on Highlanders. It is my all-time favorite book. I loved it so much that I had to write a book of my own (featuring--you guessed it--a Highlander from the 18th century). The book launches June 1 and I'm sending a copy to Diana as a thank you! :)
Cyndi Tefft
P.S. I agree with you about the first 100 pages. But Jamie... *swoon*
I just learned about Outlander a few months ago and I recently just got a copy of the book. I'm eager to read it so I can find out more on Jamie. I hear all these great things about him and the book that I can't wait to read it.

@Bookobsessedgrl I am going to have to hunt down that novella!
@Cyndi-I confess I have no idea who he is. When I googled Jamie Fraser, his picture came up, and I thought that is who he looks like to me and used the pic!
@HighlandHussy-I'm writing that title down!
@Danielle-I hope you enjoy it!
@Victoria-Normally I'd agree with the hundred page rule, but Jamie is worth the exception!
@Camille I love KMM's highlanders!
I think the books that really got me interested in Highlander books were Kresley Cole's McCarick brothers trilogy. It's hard to pick just one!
I heard about Diana Gabaldon from my mentor. She absolutely loves her books!

The KMM Highlander series were the first true highlander books I read and loved!
However I do love the men in kilts in the Love in Stake series but they can't quite be described as Highlanders!
I'm pretty sure it was Hawk from KMM's Beyond the Highland Mist-- that's the first Highlander book I can remember reading, anyway :-)

I'll say Outlander.

OMG !!! I read a series of Highlander books so long ago that I don't even know if they're in print anymore (and I don't remember anything about them but the plot and some of the characters (no names of course)......time travel book.....I fell in love instantly!!! Needless to say she meets her loves ancestor on a plane when she thinks she'll be without him forever and it's HIM -- kinda reincarnated (if you believe in that). They just instantly know!
sigh.....what a great book (series)

I'd have to agree with Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, but these posts are introducing so many new books that I have to read.

I have enjoyed all of Diana Gabaldon's books that I have managed to read so I could definitely recommend her to anyone.

International
I would have to say what sealed it for me was not just one book but a series- The Masters of Time Series by Brenda Joyce.
vampiremistress2010(at)gmail(dot)com
The book that made me love highlanders would have to be the first highlander book that I read. Spell of a highlander. Thank god it was a series. I couldn't get enough of them. But i have to say that The amazing Adam Black is my favorite. (The immortal highlander)
Thanks for sharing. I would love to win this book.
