30 days of Highlanders: Day 18: Interview with Author Veronica Wolff + Giveaway
May 13, 2011
Veronica Wolff is an award-winning, bestselling author with a soft spot for kilts and vampires. Not necessarily at the same time. Previously known for her Highlands Time Travel series, she's launching two new series with Penguin Group: The Clan MacAlpin Novels, featuring a family of strapping, seventeenth-century Highlanders, and The Watchers, starring a group of vampires and the teenaged girls who train to watch over them.
-Did you get to travel to Scotland or Ireland for any research?
Yes, and Monica McCarty is my travel buddy! We've traveled together through Scotland twice now, and hope to make our next trip in 2012.
-Which of your Highlanders was hardest to write?
Aidan MacAlpin, my most recent hero, was definitely one of the toughest. When he was only ten, Aidan was mistaken for a poor chimney sweep, and as happened to “climbing boys” and other gravely impoverished folk in seventeenth-century Scotland, he was taken and transported to a West Indies plantation to work in indentured servitude as another man’s property.
In Devil’s Own, Aidan has returned, but many years have passed, and he’s a changed man. Robbed of his childhood, family, and country, he is scarred both physically and emotionally, and is bent on revenge. It was a difficult experience going deep into his character, trying to create realistic change for him and nurturing to life a realistic love story. That said, he was also one of the most moving characters for me to explore, and his relationship with Elspeth was one of the most satisfying and enjoyable to write.
-Do you have any secret obsessions while writing you can‘t live without?
Dark chocolate...though my obsession is not-so-secret! I also blast music--I love to write to hard rock or hard rocking Celtic music. An occasional glass of Guinness never hurt either.
